Violence has always been a major issue in public schools and is a very serious concern in today’s society. Studies show that more than 50 percent of public schools contain violence each day. Have we ever taken a minute to think about how the parents of the victims feel? Do the person that caused the violence thought about the consequences before they took action? Violence in public schools to affect everyone around us. After thinking about these questions; what steps should be taken to prevent violence in public schools? Some possible answers could be more law enforcement, organized social groups, and a climate of respect. Each one of these could possibly make a positive difference in our community. On April 16, 2007 a senior at Virginia tech by the name of Seung-Hui Cho shot and killed 32 people, 17 people were injured by escaping classroom windows approximately two hours apart and later he decided to commit suicide. This tragedy sparked an intense debate about gun violence, gun laws, gaps between the U.S. system for treating mental health issues, the perpetrator 's state of mind, and the responsibility of college administrations. According to the national center for education statistics show in 2011, 7.4 percent of high schools students are reported threatened or wounded on school property. 1 year later on December 14 2012, 20 year old Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School. This took a big toll on the United States especially when young children were involved, Earlier this year, the school principal, Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, ordered a new security system installed that required visitors to be visibly identified and buzzed in. As part of the security system, the school locked its doors each day at 9:30 a.m. and hired more law enforcement and pet security to prohibit the use of gun control inside public schools. Another way we can prevent violence is more social groups and mentored groups. If parents could get more involved in the school system and show the child that they care this could really lower the violence in public schools. Most students go through getting bullied everyday in school which makes them not wanting to go back to school which can lead to drop outs at an early age or even more suicide. We never know what a person is going through looking on the outside, the child may have problems going on at home that they cannot face so they come to school taking it out on the other children, some people may even be bullied and do not know to tell anyone or feel like they have no one to talk to about their problems so I feel like public schools should have more social groups and mentor students with these problems. …show more content…
Yes we are going to have some down falls but it’s nothing we can not face and get through with the help of prayer and each other. I have learned a lot of what has been going on in the United States from doing this research paper, some things that I didn’t even know and it gave me a better understanding of what the community thought about certain situations and how they viewed different topics. So I hope that one day we can use these steps to help prevent violence in public
