"I'll do anything you ask as long as I can get a new phone, I promise!"
Just like Kino was obsessed with the pearl, teenagers are obsessed with the 'newest version' of their phone. Does that mean one isn't responsible for their actions? Kino is a father, husband, son, and brother that acts as if he only cares about being a man. He found a pearl to try to heal his son after a scorpion sting. Kino, his wife Juana and their son Coyotito head out to sea to try and find a magic pearl. They found the pearl and prayed that it would bring good fortune. Sure enough, the pearl brought fortune, but evil came along with it. Kino refused to give it away even when the trackers were putting their family in danger and hunting them down. Because of Kino's

As Kino contemplates Juana taking the pearl, "...rage surged in Kino. He rolled up to his feet and followed her as silently as she had gone, and he could hear her quick footsteps going toward the shore. Quietly he tracked her..." (Steinbeck Page 58). Kino is thinking about how to stop Juana any way he can even if it means injuring her to save his pearl. This shows how Kino is responsible for his actions because he considered what to do and knew what he was doing before he chose to do it. He had time to think about what he was doing and he still chose to abuse his wife. Just after Kino got attacked, "Kino, this pearl is evil. Let us destroy it before it destroys us. Let us crush it between two stones-let us throw it back in the sea where it belongs. Kino, it is evil, it is evil!" (Steinbeck Page 56). Prior to the pearl Kino asked Juana for advice and he respected her, but once they got the pearl he changed and no longer listened to her advice. In this quote, Juana was pleading that Kino got rid of the pearl because bad things were starting to happen to their family, but Kino refused to listen. He was blinded by the "fortune" the pearl could bring, while Juana was blinded by the well being of their …show more content…
"We will be married in a great church. And in the pearl he saw Juana with her beaten face crawling home through the night," (Steinbeck 71). Even though Kino beat Juana because she was trying to throw the pearl away and he wanted the pearl so they could get married, without the pearl there was no hope. So, Kino attacked Juana only because he loved her so much and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. It could be like you making the select or varsity team for a sport and your friends didn't make it. They were very sad about not making the cut. To their surprise, their friend started making fun of them and being very distant from them because they weren't cool enough to hang out with him anymore. One day the select team boys and their friend were taunting them so, the friends started calling him out on how he has changed and how he doesn't want to be friends with them because they weren't cool enough. So, the 'friend' on the select team started attacking them. There is a fine line between working hard to achieve a goal or dream and being obsessed with that goal or dream.
