Around 16 million people died as a result of this war, and that doesn’t include the millions of others who were wounded. In France, about half the male population between ages 15 and 30 were killed in the war (Dunn and Mitchell 721). No one can argue that those are are small numbers, but I don’t think many people truly understand how much effect each and every one of those deaths or injuries plays in so many people 's lives. Think of it this way, if a family member died in your household you, and many others would be devastated. The dynamic of the family would change drastically and you would have to go on with your life without that person. In most cases in the Great War, the one who died was a breadwinner for the family which leaves their families to fend for themselves. Just one death can throw off the lives of so many. Now imagine ten deaths. That directly affects at least ten more families. Now imagine 100, 1000, 16 million. Those are all people, people who didn’t need to die. On top of that, so many others were injured or suffered from significant emotional trauma making their homecoming and their lives after difficult for not only them but their families and
