The Cold War occurred after the traumatic events of World War 2, that lasted almost 50 years, beginning in 1945 and lasting through 1991. Even though, the United States and the Soviet Union were allies during World War 2, political tensions arose between the two nations that resulted in the production of nuclear weaponry, space race, and wars against communism that led to positive results such as improved space technology, defensive weapons, and end of communism to several countries. When World War 2 ended, political tensions could not have been prevented as United States was under the presidential term of President Truman and the Soviet Union was a nation under a tyrannical leader, Joseph Stalin. During the cold war, proxy wars occurred in Vietnam and Korea. Stalin supported communist countries including Vietnam and North Korea. In return, the United States aided South Korea and non Communist Vietnam. Since the United States aided South Korea, they were able to reach negotiations with the North that permitted the South to have a separate government not controlled by the communist North. After the Cold War, communism was starting to decline and more countries are being freed from their dictator leaders. Vietnam War received a lot of negative protest from Americans during the Cold War. About 58,000 American soldiers were killed, and and almost 304,000 wounded. It also costed $173 billion which is roughly about $770 billion in 2003 dollars. The war lasted for 19 years and the lost of the United States since North Vietnam won. The organization NASA and alliance in NATO still have a huge impact on today’s society not only to the United States, but to the world. Also, the Soviet Union disbanded, symbolizing the fall of communism in multiple countries throughout nations. This allowed the separation of North and South Korea, which benefits the South. And the joining of East and West Germany through the dismantling of the Berlin Wall.
