How Does Social Media Affect Teenagers?

What comes to mind when you see an offensive or unpleasant post a high school student has posted on their social media for all to see? Teenagers have no tact when it comes to social media. High school students don’t care how their actions will affect others well-being. Teenagers don’t understand the consequences of their online actions. A major problem with teens and social media is cyber-bulling, in the state of Georgia it’s illegal to bully people in any form. When teens post pictures and comments on the internet, it’s safe to say the post never goes away. People can save what others have posted, even if deleted. High school students don’t care if they hurt each other’s feelings. Celebrities make a big difference when raising awareness about any issue, young adults look up to famous people. Monica Lewinsky talked about bring compassions to the internet on her talk show TED talk. Bella Thorne, Demi Lovato, and Katy Perry are only some of the few celebrities raising awareness for internet bullying and inappropriate posting by teens. When teens confront other young adults on social media they’re seeking out attention and they can hid behind a screen. According to Professor Larry Rosen, “They feel safer commenting online than when they are face-to-face with people” (Rosen par. 8). Cyber-bulling is a constant problem in my school, I see it every day. The fact that not a single person cares for people’s well-being and feelings is terrible. Severe consequences for posting inappropriate material on the internet without thinking are, a high school student could cause another teen to take their own life, which could get the teen who posted the comment arrested and charged.
