The Consequences Of Sibling Abuse

In my opinion, any parental figure who witness sibling abuse or any form of maltreatment such as verbal, physical, psychological or sexual abuse, should definitely be held legally accountable. Sibling abuse is just as harmful as parental child abuse, although it has been considered the most underresearched and underrecognized form of family violence (Hines, Mally-Morrison &Dutton, 2013). In most cases, sibling abuse that is observed by a parental figure that goes unnoticed, disregarded or written off can lead to an array of consequences. The Ethical Dilemmas surrounding ‘Savior Siblings’ In 2002, Jayson and Michelle Whitaker, the parents of Charlie Whitaker, their then four year old son, faced a decision that would test the bounds of both modern medicine and the ethical limitations which govern it. When he was twelve weeks old, Charlie had been diagnosed with Diamond-Blackfan Anemia (DBA), a rare blood disease which prevents the body from creating sufficient red blood cells; requiring frequent treatments which prove painful and exhaustive for both the recipient and in this case the helpless, on-looking parents. To stay alive, Charlie received recurring blood transfusions and almost nightly drug infusions. Distraught with their son’s ailment, traumatizing treatment and the…

Experts say in A Kansas City Star’s article called “It Isn’t Rare for Parents to Single out One Child for Abuse”, that there are many reasons why an abusive parent might target one child and that this situation is not uncommon (Bergen, 2012). I found this statement surprising. I had no idea that there were various reasons why some abusive parents choose one child to abuse from many siblings. I was under the impression that there could only be one underlying psychological problem. Studies say that many of the reasons for parents singling out children for abuse include having a child that is difficult to manage, having a child that has physical and medical needs, and or having a child that represents something negative to the parent (Bergen, 2012).…

Siblings can quite often be the longest relationship someone will have in their lifetime. Though many people hold the principle that having one child is the way to succeed in today's society and economy, the benefits to having multiple children is vast and expansive. The benefits outweigh the negatives to having siblings. Just as author Jeffrey Kluger states in his article The New Science of Siblings, from the time that we are born our siblings are our collaborators and co-conspirators, our role models and cautionary tales (395). The beneficial love, support, and influence on each other are some of the many bonds that are created.…
