Sex Trafficking The sexual exploitation of human beings has been an around for longer than most people would believe. It has become a huge issue in society in recent years, but has been around for centuries. Unfortunately, people are not aware of how common it is for humans to be trafficked both globally and here in the U.S. According to the International Labor Organization, approximately 4.5 million humans worldwide were victims of this form of modern slavery (Polaris Project, n.d.). Although slavery has been abolished in most of the world, people are still being exploited for labor and sex. This is most likely why people are not as conscious about how frequently it actually happens. Many victims are brought here from foreign countries, and promised a better life with a good job and various other opportunities that they otherwise would not be able to have in their home countries. Of course these opportunities and promises never come. Instead, they are held against their will, abused, and tortured. There are instances where the family actually sells the daughters or women of the family because of poverty. Oftentimes, the father is too poor to support his family, especially when the family has more than two children. Therefore when there’s an overcrowded family and they need to make ends meet, one of the daughters will usually be sold for some amount of money. Fathers are not the only ones guilty of this; at times it will be a husband or a partner who sells his wife or significant other away. Another way people become victims of the sex trade is by kidnapping. Teenage girls who run away to rebel against their parents are particularly vulnerable to the possibility of being kidnapped and trafficked. Girls who are going through the years of puberty become exposed to more dangerous situations as they get older. The lack of protection used during intercourse does not just leave them exposed to diseases, but also the possibility of becoming pregnant. Forced abortions and miscarriages are not uncommon is sex trafficking victims (Deshpande & Nour, 2013). Everything these women and girls are put through is cruel and inhumane. Their human rights are being violated everyday so that these traffickers can make a profit. No one wants to be held against his or her own free will. These are heinous crimes that need to be fought to put an end
