School lunches are also insufficient because they are failing to teach nutritional value to children. “In the Year 2012, more than 31.6 million children each day got their lunch through the National School Lunch Program. Since the modern program began, more than 224 billion lunches have been served” (National School lunch program par.14). These billions of children that have been consuming these school lunches throughout their school years from kindergarden up until they have graduated are accustomed to the consumption of unhealthy food. The example the school is setting for these children is causing them to develop hard to change eating habits that will follow them throughout their life and will have an effect on their food consumption choices. …show more content…
The children consuming these free or reduced lunches that are supposed to be healthy lunches approved by the state and federal government are causing sickness and diseases. These young people that are continuing to eat these unhealthy meals are developing diabetes, anemia, high blood pressure, obesity and many other health issues. According to Danielle Hollar, et al, “Childhood-onset obesity is related to numerous risk factors for cardio metabolic disease that track from childhood into adulthood, including elevated blood pressure and lipids” (646). It is unfortunate parents and children are unaware of these consequences because they believe just because the schools and state are providing these lunches they are healthy. According to “What’s Natural about our Natural Products?” in Language Awareness people often eat meals based off the labels put on them and claims to be healthy by others, rather than look deeper into the products ingredients ().As more and more kids are consuming these unhealthy school lunches, society is creating a whole new generation leading to unhealthy lifestyles. These consequences are impactful because children are taking these eating habits they have developed and learned from school and are taking these habits home with them and are basing their foods choices off these habits. These unhealthy food choices are leading to a widespread health epidemic. “An estimated 61 percent of overweight young people have at least one additional risk factor for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure” (The Role of Schools preventing childhood obesity par. 5).
