The Consequences Of Rebellion In John Updike's A & P '?

In many cases, people may be forced by external circumstances to make decisions. However, the results of such decisions can either have a positive or negative impact on the lives of an individual. Such a case is well presented in the story A &P by John Updike where the major character, Sammy is portrayed to be rebellious. His rebellion appears to have more disadvantages than advantages as it complicates his life, which leads him into making uninformed decisions. It is, therefore, true to say that Sammy's rebellion in the John Updike's A & P is more futile than heroic and only makes negative complications in his life. Throughout the story, Sammy’s, the major character, rebellious actions have a negative effect on the customers, his boss, and …show more content…
His absence in the store could have affected the fellow workers and, especially, his manager who is indicated to have been a friend of his parents. "He's been a friend of my parents for years.” (p.323) If Sammy’s parent were there to witness this, they would be ashamed of his dastardly and inappropriate act of manner toward his boss. Moreover, Sammy’s rebellious actions may have affected him financially and disrupted his only source of income. Without money, Sammy won't be able to obtain the necessities of life such as food, games, or clothing. Thus, his rebellious leaves him without girls, job, but only pointless and actions. It only lands him in trouble and making his life more miserable than before. Although quitting the job could have provided him with an opportunity to get the one that pleased him, it caused him great harm. He lost both his job, the three girls he was defending, and his lack of respect for his boss earned him nothing but poor work relationship. However, there is a likelihood that if given another chance, he would not have repeated the same actions. Leaving his job can be viewed positively because it appears to displease him. Although it is not indicated what happens to him later, this could have been a golden opportunity for Sammy to seek the kind of job that would make him

At first, he is bored and dull, no better than one of the "sheep" he makes fun of. Later, as he watches McMahon, the butcher, "Patting his mouth and looking after them, sizing up their joints,”Sammy begins to sympathize with the girls. Then when Lengel scolds the girls and falsely tells them that it's store policy that they have to have their shoulders covered, Sammy realizes, "That's policy for you. Policy is what the kingpins want. What the others want is juvenile delinquency". He now identifies with the girls; he is one of the "others" who disagree with the kingpins. When Sammy makes his decision to quit, Lengel pretends not to understand him, forcing Sammy to reconsider. Sammy still decides to quit. He knows his grandmother would be proud of him for standing up for the girls. However, he does admit that trying to stand up for everyone who is mistreated will make his life hard from now…

We know a lot about this short story by hearing Sammy’s perspective of things. We can picture in our heads the exact day those girls walked into the grocery store, and what kind of day it was. It was a very slow Thursday afternoon. As the girls walked in and caught Sammy’s eye, he goes into depth of what each of the girls look like. Whether he describes the chunky girl in the plaid two piece bathing suit, or the second girl with chubby berry face, we can get a basic idea of what type of girls these are and even what they look like. He goes on to describe “Queenie”, the head of the crew. This is the one that got Sammy’s eye. She was wearing a dirty pink, beige bathing suit with the straps pushed down exposing her tan lines. She did not look around much, she was clearly a very confident person. Sammy tells us what a pig the butcher is. He was “sizing up their joints” (page 202) as they walked away from the meat counter, and so Sammy began to feel sorry for them. When reading this story and paying close attention to Sammy’s point of view, we wouldn’t know that he would try to be the “unexpected hero” to the girls at the end of the story when he quits his job in front of…

Throughout the story, there are countless instances described that could lead to the conclusion that Sammy, the front-end cash register attendant at a grocery store named A&P, could be perhaps uninterested with his duties at work. One example being that when he was describing a certain aisle in his store, he named the aisle in…

The overwhelming part of having a job as a fully-grown working adult, besides having to spend all your money on bills, is having to put up with the worst types of people simply because you desperately need a paying job. More aptly put, because that worst type of person is usually put in a position of power over you. In the short story “A&P” Sammy had to make a decision, though probably based majorly on his lower half rather than his actual brain, to quit his job due to a strong belief that his supervisor treated a customer unfairly. Sammy was lucky being young means most likely he is without a lot of bills. The Author, John Updike, so easily conveys the setting and era in which this story was written. Sammy’s decision to take a stance against his manager was so much more meaningful due to when, and where this story took place.…

Sammy works at a grocery chain store known as A&P. He works as a cashier and doesn’t particularly like his job or really anyone he works with. He spends his time judging everyone inside of his head as they go about their day inside of the story. He doesn't have many nice things to say about anyone up until three girls walk into the store and it's like he put into a transes. I’m sure it was that the three girls were in bikini’s. He sits behind his register staring at these girls as they walk by aisle after aisle. Examining every detail of their bodies and depicting what he thinks is there stasis in their little clique. He picks out the leader of the clique and names her Queenie in his head and it seems he is drawn to her and her friends. It like he see’s them as freedom and joy in life and he is stuck in his job where he is forced to conform and work. When the girls finally come up to the counter and try to pay for the item that they had came in for they are greeted by the manager. Lengal, and is very proper and no nonsense type of man. He barks at the girls telling them how they shouldn't be dressed as if they were at the beach if they were gonna shop there. Sammy doesn't like Lengal going after his girls and he shows on his face. Lengal then asks if he had rang the girls up after he was done scolding at them for their appearance. After he rings them and before the girls leave out of the store he quits in an attempt to try…

Sammy’s thought process when he quit his job was not very good because he put the girls over his job. Sammy states that, “Hoping they’ll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero.” This shows how Sammy thinks that he is actually the girl’s heroes. His thoughts inside the store are based around the girls and trying to impress them. Another great usage of diction is when Updike states, “cat-and-dogfood-breakfast-cereal-macaroni-rice-raisins-seasonings-spreads-spaghetti-soft-drinks-crackers-and-cookies aisle.” This goes to show how well Sammy knew the aisles of the grocery store. This means he has worked there for a while. Sammy refers to the customers of the store as “sheep” which means he views the customers as a herd. In the same sentence Sammy says, “The girls were walking against the usual traffic.” This continues to show that he thinks the girls are more important than the rest of the people that are inside the grocery store. The strongest use of words in the story were the words “I quit.” I believe that these were the strongest words in the story because it signifies that Sammy is ending his job at the grocery store all because he was trying to impress the girls.…

When Sammy asks to not embarrass those girls in reply the manager blame girls to wear inappropriate clothing in public. According to Sammy, he prefers to leave the job and stand up for the girls and not have the manager treat them like that. This part of the story represents Sammy’s morals and ethical side. For instance, he has to make some choices and he decides to take action despite not knowing what he will do in the next minutes or what his future holds for him. “My stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter”(Updike 443), this shows that his actions may impulsive, but he means what he wants. He digests his harsh words and expects the consequences of his spontaneity, but it seems he made his first move of adulthood and man with morals.…

Sammy, a 19-year-old boy, serves as a protagonist character in the A&P short Story. He initially works as a cashier in a small-town supermarket. The A&P story happens in a small community that carries a profound conservative opinion (Wheeler, 2011). At the start of the story, three young ladies walk into the store putting on bathing suits. The way how the girls go about dressing themselves makes people especially Sammy look upon them strangely, which reveals the rift within the young and the old generations. The character Sammy could be described in a variety of ways. Despite that, Sammy is very observant of his surrounding and an opinionated person. Regardless, right from the beginning of the story, Sammy is viewed to be an immature person…
