To protect and to serve, is how one would be able to describe law enforcement in a few words. As a society we believe that law enforcement is supposed to have one of the most rewarding and sacrificial jobs out there. Being able to be in any branch of law enforcement is no easy picnic. It is at times very difficult, demanding, and stressful. The men and women in law enforcement are made to be our heroes, to protect their community and to serve us with such pride and dignity. But what happens when the law enforcement officials we have sought out to believe are our one and only protectors have gone against the rules, and the hierarchy. So if police corruption has been around all this time, there is a reason as to why people are sometimes so mistrusting of law enforcement and that is the sad truth. Police corruption is such a complex occurrence. It is such a problem that has been resurfaced time and time again and will carry on to have an effect on everyone, whether you are a resident or on police force. Dating back to the beginning of policing, so many aspects of policing have been able to change, some for the better of society and some not so well made out decisions. If you were to need the basic definition of corruption it would be, when a law enforcement official gets involved in mishaps where the officer uses his or her position, by act or faux pas, to be able to obtain benefits for themselves. Beginning with the main purpose for several cases of corruption would be that it is for just selfish personal gain, for example bribery. Police mistreatment of power occurs in three different areas such as psychological violence, physical violence, and legal violence. Let us being with psychological violence, this often occurs when disrespect, harassment, mockery, and intimidation come into play.
