Character Analysis: We Are Called To Rise

Improved Essays
Abuse is something everyone fears, and happens to many people. It has plagued humanity for centuries, and might not let up any time soon. People need to become more aware of it and learn the signs to see and possibly stop it.
One of the most common and known types of abuse is physical abuse. It is what we see on TV, what we have read about in books, or have even seen in real life. We Are Called to Rise deals with physical abuse. It comes up in at least two character’s stories; Bashkim and Nate. Bashkim’s father abuses his mother physically by “shaking her,” as he puts it, or “flipping the backs of his fingers” against her. “Flipping the backs of his fingers” sounds a lot like a backhand slap.

In her health class, a guest speaker came in and opened her eyes towards a few things. She remembered how the other girl would pressure her into doing some things. How she had bugged her for months to let her kiss her. How she always felt guilty for not being able to help with things that were not her fault. She remembered all the fights that happened in between the major ones. None of it was healthy, on her end or the other girl’s. There were things in that relationship she must have forgotten, because when she saw her ex in a bookstore that same year, she nearly had a panic attack. Even after the other girl had dropped out and was nowhere near her on a daily basis, she still shook like a leaf and almost puked at the very sight.
This girl still hated the other one for what she did, but it was dull. She was out of her life for good, she had made sure of that the same week they broke up so many years ago, and we never see it coming. We never see the abuse or the break up coming. It sneaks up on you when you think everything is perfect at the time. In the end, broken relationships turn into nothing but broken promises and gifts that no longer mean anything.
Abuse can happen to anyone. That might be why we are so cautious about who we date, or what we do. No one wants to face abuse daily. They do not want to fear the people they love, or fear going to work every day. They want to live their life in happiness. Since abuse can happen to anyone, we must be careful of the signs, and try to get out before it is too

Physical abuse can be defined as any act causing injury or trauma to another person by physical contact. Adults can be victim, but in most cases, children are the victims of physical abuse. I feel that children who are abused from their parents are affected in their later life according to “The Five Things Most likely to Ruin Your Child’s Life,” Dr. Ungar explains that Childhood abuse is actually much more likely to affect a child. In Dr. Langberg’s lecture on “Trauma and Abuse,” she discusses various forms of abuse that can take place. Three of these abuses were physical abuse, emotional abuse, and spiritual abuse. These three forms of abuse (along with verbal abuse) are similar in that each of them use some form of power to control, manipulate, and/or intimidate another individual. The differences between the types of abuses mentioned above is, the type of “power” the abuser uses to gain the control over the victim and/or to manipulation and intimidation them: - Someone who is physically abusive will use their physical power over their victim to gain the desired behavior. - An emotional abuser will, often very subtly, use emotional “power” such as rejecting,…

When working in a care setting, especially with service users with physical disabilities, workers need to acknowledge that the service users are vulnerable to abuse. This is because people with physical disabilities are so much more dependent on care givers to supply them with the support they need in order to live clean and healthy lives. Two of the main types of abuse that care workers will face when working with vulnerable and disabled service users are physical abuse and neglect. NSPCC (2015) states that physical abuse is deliberate and unlawful physical contact that causes harm to the victim, whether the damage caused is intentional or not; it can happen to men and women of all ages. Physical abuse usually ends in the victim suffering…

A sentence that really stood out to me was, " Even as a child she had lived her own small life within herself. At a very early period she had apprehended instinctively the dual life - that outward existence which conforms, the inward life which questions. "(Chapter 7) To me, this shows an entirely new side of Edna, one readers weren't really exposed to before. This paragraph was really well written because it not only gives context (Edna's childhood), but it also exposes a conflict Edna has dealt with her entire life.…
