The Consequences Of My Gender Norm Violations In Society

My gender norm violations were to do the casual norms of men, I committed to walking down the street whistling and “catcalling” toward men, mansitting on the bus, open doors for my male coworkers, disregard manners in a restaurant and offer a man a drink. When I enacted my first violation which I mentioned was walking down the street whistling and “catcalling”, I was with my friend and we did this in my city in a very populated area. We began in the evening, my friend also gladly accepted to not only help me but participate with me as well. My friend would be whistling at cars since she has the clearer whistle sound and I would respond “heyyy” and look, we would get some honks by other cars even though we were not dressed inappropriate. I think most girls have this idea of how to sit and it has actually been a cause of socialization that women should not take up so much space while men are allowed to take up as much space as they can. “Women are gentle, sensitive, and nurturant, and men are insensitive, aggressive and temperamental” (Sapiro, 73). I believe as mentioned in the book Women in American Society that from how the author says women are described is the reason why most men are not bothered on the bus for seats. I admit that is the reason why I do not approach a man on the bus when I take it but I can easily ask a girl if a seat next to her is taken over asking the man. The eye contact is also another reason I agree with that statement because men most of the time do not make eye contact and others can interrupt as they are “temperamental” which signify they might be aggressive and as a result they are avoided, and since I did not make eye contact with people I was avoided. I do not do mansitting anymore I think the norm has been so inscribed with me that I cannot continue to commit to it because it was not difficult for me to do but I just prefer not taking up much
