Why are people so brisk to blame? Why are the ones who are to blame, actually blaming others? How can one end this wicked cycle? Arthur Miller found himself in this cycle. He uses historical events in The Crucible to shows how revenge affects the world and how one's integrity can help influence a society.
The Salem Witch Trials was a bleak time in American history. The event started in 1692 (“Salem Witch Trials”). The community of Salem were looking for witches; then put them on trial (“Salem Witch Trials”). He had a lot of inspiration from the world around him because they were done with war, they had gone through a great depression, the people of this time wanted a distraction (“Arthur Miller”). Arthur Miller wrote a play called The Crucible (“Arthur Miller”). It was quite obvious that he was comparing his current issue with McCarthyism to the time when The Crucible took place (“Arthur Miller”). It did not take long for the House of Un-American Activities Committee to crack down on him and to find a reason for Miller being associated with the communist (“Arthur Miller”). After being grilled in court he still was not willing to accuse others to add to their malicious hunt for possible communist people (“Arthur Miller”). Even though he was innocent the Committee believed that he was guilty (“Arthur Miller”). He was charged with defiance of Congress and convicted in 1957 (“Arthur Miller”). Proctor stands up for what he believes in. He has strong moral principles. For example, Procter had said, “No it is not the same! What others say and what I sign is not the same!”(Page 143) Proctor is pointing out that verbal is not the same as written documentation. Documentation is proof that something is agreed upon and will hold up in a dispute. Although, verbal words can be misinterpreted in context and become gossip with twist untruths. He does not want to confess but he wants his life. Another example is when Procter says, “I have made a bell of my honor! I have rung the doom of my good name--you will believe me, Mr. Danforth! My wife is innocent , except she knew a whore when she saw one!” (page 111). Proctor is standing up for his wife who saw right through Abigail and her passion for her husband. This shows the integrity of his wife and her wisdom. The final example of Protecter showing integrity is when he says, “ You will not use me! I am no Sarah Good or Tituba, I am John Proctor! You will not use me! It is no part of salvation that you should use me!” (page 142) He did not want to sacrifice other people's names. He knew they were good people and he could not say these bad things about them to save himself; when they were doing what was right.
