The Benefits Of Immigration To The United States

Great Essays
Today approximately 11.7 Million people today are doing their best to live in the shadows of the United States (Preston). These people are living like second-rate citizens all while constantly having to worry about immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) coming to rip them away from the life they have built here. Many of these immigrants have lived here for years. They have jobs, families and friends. However, because of their legal status, they must fear deportation and cannot participate in elections and social programs. These individuals are often criticized and told to go back to their own country, but for many leaving the US is not an option they are willing to take. So with all these immigrants here illegally what are we to do? Should …show more content…
In 1829 a processing center known as Elis Island handled thousands of immigrants each day. The immigrants at Elis Island were asked a list of 29 questions such as: Do you have any money, relatives or a job in the US? Are you a polygamist? An anarchist? Then doctors would look over them for diseases or handicaps. Usually this process would take 3 or 4 hours and then the immigrants would be released and free to enter America (Eyewitness to History). What were the goals of these immigrants; they wanted freedom from oppressive governments. With so many people flocking to the America, the US became known as the “melting pot” because it welcomed any and all people with the desire to become a citizen. However, with such a large amount of immigrants wishing to enter the country and a rapidly growing population these relaxed immigration policies have changed. As a result of these changing policies, a new breed of immigrant has formed: the illegal …show more content…
Why would large companies want to hire illegal immigrants? Simply because illegal immigrants are willing to work at much lower wages than your average American. Although, companies such as Intel say they support amnesty due to a high-tech worker shortage, they say there are simply not enough workers in the US and that we need to bring more in. But recent studies have shown that in fact, there is a job shortage for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). The unemployment levels for STEM fields are higher than in the past, implying that there is a lack of work in the fields. If there was a shortage we would be seeing lower unemployment levels and increasing wages which is not happening

They could also feel unsafe to call police in an occasion when police is needed. A lot of them are afraid already because they do not want to be deported. Most do not want to lose a close loved one. Many illegal immigrants are afraid of immigration due to the fact that they could do absolutely nothing wrong and still be deported. “We have seen it case after case how immigrants nationwide are afraid of contacting law enforcement.” (Sanchez-Moreno).…

If companies have the choice to pay their worker more or to move the company they will more than likely to outsource their companies. There is a growing concern that increasing the minimum wage would result in more businesses outsourcing their jobs overseas where workers are paid much less than $4 an hour let alone $10. People fear that if the companies are forced to pay workers more than $10 and hour, companies will ship jobs overseas for lower overheads costs than pay more for workers here. “As well-paying manufacturing jobs have left America, low skill workers have turned to low paying service jobs, filling the roles that used to be filled by teenagers and high school dropouts. The majority of new jobs created now are in the service sector.…

The idea is that an immigrant will do the same work as an American but for less money, which not only decreases the income of the employed lower class, but also forces Americans who need higher wages to live out of a job (Noah, 68-69, 2012). Not only are wages not rising with inflation, they are actually decreasing when compared to wages before the 1970’s. I was not aware that this kind of issue existed because I believed that minimum wage would prevent workers from being paid low wages. A possible solution to this issue may be to raise the minimum wage slightly to compete with inflation so that immigrants can’t provide as much competition for American workers. Additionally, a higher minimum wage would allow lower-class workers to increase their income, therefore decreasing the gap in income between the classes.…

Entry level workers will be the first to be fired because they are not the source generating high profits. This then leads to further complications such as poverty. Another solution for businesses and companies to prevent profit loss is raising the prices of their goods and services. As previously mentioned, it has been a trend for inflation to rise as the minimum wage increases. If this trend were to continue there would be no significance in raising the minimum wage because people would continue to struggle to afford expenses.…

According to The Washington Post, “the illegal immigrant population in the United States has fallen below 11 million” (Markon). With the United States population being approximately 323 million people, the population is 3.4 percent illegal immigrants. With this number so high, there are many negative consequences. These immigrants come in illegally and get jobs where they do not pay taxes, so they are not contributing to welfare or social security. The government should create a new immigration plan because the current plan leads to less available jobs, an increased risk of terrorism, and economic problems.…

The employees that remain are then forced to work harder for the small increase that they receive in their pay. Minimum wage increases hurt the poor more than it helps them as more jobs are lost compared to the money that will be made by the poor. Economist David Neumark at the University of California-Irvine has found that less than twenty percent of earning benefits from an increase in minimum wage would reach people living below poverty(Puzder 2). Despite having the highest minimum wage in the country up until recent, $10.74, San Francisco 's income inequality does not show that it helps. According to a Brooking Institute report, San Francisco ranks second in income inequality in major U.S. cities only behind Atlanta(Puzder 2).…

When it comes to technology, most will agree that its advancements play a huge role in unemployment. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is with the question of its long-term effects. While some are convinced that technology will soon create jobs, it is more likely that available jobs will continue to decrease. Peter Diamandis says that there is controversy over whether or not technological unemployment actually hurts workers or the economy in the long run. Although the rise of technology has caused a major decrease in available mid-wage jobs, he believes that this is temporary and that within several decades the economy will be stronger than ever.…

If illegal immigrants were to be deported, other Americans would have to take the places of these people. To make up for the loss of unskilled, undocumented workers in the country, better-educated workers than ones who only have a high school diploma would be drawn into less skilled jobs (Perryman). This yields negative consequences: higher wages, and therefore higher prices, which affect living standards and damper economic growth. However, some argue that similarly skilled Americans are forced to either accept lower pay or not work at all (Davidson). Although this effect is irrefutably negative, the impact on everyone else is positive.…

If the amount of money people make at the lowest level begins to increase, so will the mid and high level paying jobs will also have to be paid more creating inflation. Inflation is not something that we need more of as it will make the US dollar weaker against other currency and what a dollar is worth now after raising minimum wage it will only be worth a fraction of what it is now. Inflating the dollar will not help the situation of poverty because then people will be making more money, but that money will not be worth as much. When the cost finally takes over and businesses close instead of making 7.25 minimum wage or whatever they raise it to they will be earning nothing. By trying to fix our problem there is a thin line between what will help and what could end up doing more harm than good and even possibly pushing us into another recession.…
