For example, the “Asian” math geeks, the “Spanish” maids, “Middle Eastern” terrorist. These are some the negative roles that are perpetuated in the media and movies today. These false and damaging stereotypes fuel existing tensions. Sadly, the media also uses bias when choosing what is newsworthy. For example, minorities are given less media time when they are victims of a crime. The also emphasize race as a headline for example “Hispanic woman” caught shoplifting, “Black Man” arrested, “Muslim” girl is missing. Many of media made stories or intended to be front page news to attract ratings, sponsors, and audiences. The focus should be on the alleged crime or societal issues at hand. Except for hate crimes, I believe these crimes vary in the sense that they are specific. Hate crimes consist of the attacker using discrimination to target their victims. In these cases, there should be an emphasis on who the targets are. This is needed to take the necessary measures needed to protect that person or group from further attacks. However, in regards to other crimes once we label people by class, race religion we begin to strip away the significance offense which can impact the efforts needed to find a positive resolution. “(N.J.) professor John C. Feaster released a study comparing the proportions of race and gender from the news coverage of five national television stations between 2005 and 2007 to official missing children statistics. The study showed that African-American and female missing children were significantly under-represented in television news coverage”. This unfortunate statistic shows why the media should not emphasis race doing so can minimize news coverage for those who do not fit their media bias criteria. Victims should all be deserving of the spotlight regardless of the media
