Only in the past few decades has it been effective enough to be used by militaries and criminal groups to reach their goals. NATO claims that the first cyber attack occurred in 1988 and destroyed computer systems by inserting a virtual worm into the systems causing them to slow down so much that they became unusable (Review). The person responsible for this attack now works as a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology which shows the intellectual ability required to attempt a cyber attack when it was first proved effective. For the next two decades cyber warfare slowly became more dangerous but was not thought of as a major threat until 2006 when NASA discovered they were at risk of being hacked. They were forced to delay shuttle launch plans in order to secure their systems and prevent them from being tampered with (Review). Since then cyber attacks have become more frequent and become so complex that it has caught the attention of world leaders. Attacks have become so common that those paying attention know how much of a threat cyber warfare really is. Over the past few years nations have become more aware of the dangers and are beginning to take steps to prevent the damages that can be done. Many nations are beginning to assemble specialized teams and hold high level meetings in order to combat these hackers and protect their citizens. Cyber warfare …show more content…
Before the presidential election, there were many rumors going around that Russia was tampering with the election, more specifically the primaries. If these rumors are true then cyber warfare has affected the very foundation of the American Democracy. Although primaries are technically not officially a part of the government, they do play a major part in the deciding of the next President of the United States of America. The New York Times stated on October 7th, “The U.S. government for the first time on Friday formally accused Russia of a campaign of cyber attacks against Democratic Party organizations ahead of the Nov. 8 presidential election” (Reuters). This was after Newsweek stated back in August, “Officials and cyber security experts say recent breaches at the Democratic National Committee and elsewhere in the Democratic Party were likely carried out by people within the Russian government” (Rinaldi). This is a critical statement because before this time the United States Government had not formally accused Russia of tampering with the elections. This could cause a rift in the relationship between the Russian government and the United States government which has been stable since the end of the Cold War in the 1980s. Russia has denied all allegations of course, but if these accusations are true then this could

There are a lot of terrorist attacks you don’t read about in the paper, the reason for that is because they were either stopped or contained to protect the American people, for example in September 2009, federal agents arrested Naji-bullah Zazi and four others for purchasing chemical explosive materials to try and bomb the New York subway system (Fox 19 Now). One of the most recent and most tragic events was the Boston Bombing back in April 2013. The Patriot Act was not able to prevent the attack to happen, but it allowed the NSA to identify the Tsarnaev brothers and uncovered a follow up attack that was going to happen in Fall 2013 by going through cell phone pictures and email records. Fortunately, with the fatality of one brother and the arrest of the other one they were unable to go on with their plans (History.com Staff). Along with Al-Qaeda, there are many other terrorist groups around the world that would want to harm America, one of the most dangerous is ISIS.…

An example of an issue that is time and time again riddled with disinformation and propaganda is the US Elections. Obviously we know how fake news infected the Trump v Clinton election this past year, swaying voters opinions and arguably altering the end result, but this is not a new occurrence. Only the past September former US president Barack Obama warmed Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerburg about the danger of fake news on Facebook, and understandably so. Obama has been the victim of false allegations and news stories ever since he first ran for office in 2008, when a photo from his Muslim half-brother's wedding began circling the internet. This was all that was needed for allegations of Obama's "secret Muslim faith" and people began questioning whether he was even an American.…

(Littleton) One month after the attacks of 9/11, a former national security cyber terrorism expert expressed concern about the launch of a cyber attack, which would cause confusion and panic. Most recently, the “SONY” attacks by North Korea and the hijacking of the web site ‘Ashley Madison’ by the group known as The Impact Team, was an attempt to not only destroy software or equipment, but was an act of cyber terrorism used to exploit sensitive information that could be detrimental to lives of politicians, business leaders, and thousands of others. (Ellyatt) “When a U.S. military plane crashed in Chinese territory in 2003 after computer hackers attacked American systems with viruses, the academic, Dr. Alan Ryan, warned that cyber terrorism was the way of the future and the nation’s security experts would have to focus their attention on the problem.” (Murrill) In response to the undeniable fact that cyber terrorism is a relevant and dangerous threat, President Barrack Obama bolstered cyber terrorism defense. Today a “cyber war” is taking place. Government agencies and corporations have tripled the hiring of cyber security experts, and the field is one of the fastest growing and in- demand areas of the global workforce.…

According to former US Secretary of Defense (SECDEF) Leon E. Panetta, “a cyber attack perpetrated by nation states or violent extremist groups could be as destructive as the terrorist attack on 9/11.” He further elaborated on the danger our cyber based society faces in an October 2012 meeting with business leaders, highlighting high profile cyber attacks that affected Saudi Arabia and Qatar’s energy sector. In this attack conducted by unknown actors “30 thousand computers integral to Saudi Arabia and Qatar’s energy sector were rendered useless”, and he warned that America 's critical infrastructure and corporations are in danger just as much if not more so than any other country in the world. In order to better understand the danger in which…
