Should College Students Attend Classes

Decent Essays
Some college students might often lack the motivation to attend their classes. While professors can be different, the outcome of a student not going to class will not change; the consequences will always only affect the student. Therefore, the student should be able to decide himself or herself whether they should go to class or not. At the same time, college professors may enforce an attendance rule, but forcing a student to come to class when they absolutely do not want to be there could be a waste of their time. If a student is forced to attend class, but they completely shut out anything the professor is teaching that would not be beneficial for the student in any way. The student could be making more use of their time by doing …show more content…
If the student happens to be an auditory and intrapersonal leaner then the student is probably more comfortable in a classroom with a professor that lectures. On the other hand, if the student is an interpersonal learner then they would probably prefer a class that has a lot of group discussions. Some intrapersonal learners might not be capable of learning in a class that has a lot of group discussions, and some interpersonal learners might not be capable of learning in a class that is pure lecturing. Forcing a student to attend a class that they do not learn in wastes time that they could be using learning the material in a way that makes them …show more content…
Giving a student the option to come to class could make them more responsible as a person and could allow them to prioritize their educational needs. If a student’s priority is to obtain high grades then they will more than likely attend class regularly. On the contrary, required attendance does not guarantee high grades. If the professor happens to teach everything straight from the book, requiring attendance would be foolish because the student could study the exact same material in the comfort of his or her own home. If the professor chose to add information of their own to teach and include on tests then the amount of students willing to come to class would more than likely be higher. Requiring attendance will only make students present; it does not make them learn. They could be in class and only hear what the professor is saying, but not actually learning or understanding the material. All in all, mandatory attendance is not an effective way of helping students learn. With the technology that is available today, professors could find ways to help students learn outside of the classroom whether it is sending lectures, assigning class discussions online, or assigning students to do programs that cover the material the professor

With school having many students but not very many teachers classes are skewed beyond belief. Students do not get to pick their courses but are randomly assigned. This means if a student is interested in let’s say hairdressing and she gets put in a sewing class she is stuck in that sewing class. So students that are qualified to take an AP course may not be able to be put in those classes because they are randomly assigned and that means some kids are destined to fail if they are not up to AP standards and are put in an AP course. In addition, if students do not have internet or a place to study they have only a half hour after school to work in the library.…

Disappointments Since I started the ACCG950 course, there are not many disappointed points. I would say that my disappointment relates to the location of our classroom and the attendant of students. Firstly, I acknowledge that the classroom was changed because the room is too small for all students. With your concerns, the new room is big enough for all students; however, the number of students attending the lecture has been low.…

Angel Muniz Ms. Sanders Sociology 160 February 17, 2017 Year Round Schooling There is a normal form of education where we have students attend school for 9 months and rest for 3, but in this updated system of year round schooling, schools continue to operate 180 days per year, the only difference being that they stretch out the 180 days over the entire year and take shorter breaks between each term. Having an alternative to education regarding attending year round is the most beneficial way to reach the ultimate form of success for a student. With having a sociological perspective that mostly focuses on functionalism as part of it, we can better understand the benefits of year round schooling. Functionalism is compared to seeing the wide angle…

Remove the Chromebooks! Have you ever wondered how bad chromebooks can be in the classroom and how they can cause distractions to the learning environment? Students would want to play games on their chromebooks whenever they get the chance. Teachers try using a spy check on the chromebooks but whenever they look away the students get the chance to play games. Another reason is schools don’t even have enough in the budget to pay teachers the average payment, so how would schools afford buying and repairing chromebooks every day?…

I want to attend Baylor University because it has the main eight aspects I consider most important to me when contemplating whether or not I am interested in a school. The reasons why I wish to attend Baylor University is that it is one of the top schools in the region for education, it possesses a friendly, Christian atmosphere, and is home to the 2015 National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling team. The university also has a great location, friendly community, relatively small class sizes, several meaningful traditions, and a variety of interest-based clubs. The first and most overriding reason I want to attend Baylor University is that, according to the U.S News and World Report, it is one of the top 100 doctoral-granting universities in the United States.…

In society, teachers are expected to aim students towards achieving academic success and excellence. The performance of teachers enables students to effectively engage themselves in their learning environments. As a result, students are capable of working interactively and devoting their time to school. The standards that teachers make often determines how well a student performs in class. In general, students who not involved in classroom activities are less driven and more inclined to become disorientated compared to those who are fully committed.…

There’s one day specifically that I recall within the current school year. I was sitting in my third-period economics class, and it was only a month into the year, yet already I wasn’t expecting to learn anything at all. My peers filed in to sit at their desks, each student either immediately pulling out their phone or beginning an uproar of conversation; meanwhile, my teacher sat there and did nothing other than taking attendance. This scene continued for the next 45 minutes, and attendance is the single thing we did in class that day. As the bell rang and I walked out the door of the classroom I found myself feeling frustrated as well as extremely helpless, wondering why my teacher should have the job of “teaching” if he was not even going to do it.…

Process Analysis Students in school wonder if it 's possible to get all A 's in their classes or maybe just one class. I’m going to start off with experience from school. With some of the experience that I had in school I think it is possible to get an A but the student has to be on the ball and not slack off at the end. Students just have to try hard and not get distracted when they are doing their work or studying. If they could do that then there will be no problem on passing the class with a good grade.…

Attendance is known to help us be responsible in life instead of acting irresponsible like our high school days. My opponent may also say that we that being lenient on attendance may cause consequences for students, and a bad reputation for the school itself. Students may start to lack in their school work with a lenient attendant policy, and the absentees will continue to increase. Classes would be dismissed earlier than usual, and maybe even teacher will barely show up for class, because of the many absent of students who continue to not show up. Teacher may even start to make attendance a part of their daily grades.…

You should not be fined or heavily punished for missing school. Sometimes something will come up that causes you to miss a day or two of school. You could have a family emergency or a sickness. For example, some students who feel forced to go, don 't do well. Others who feel like they will have another benefit other than just their education is a good encouragement and would be a good way to make a student come to class without forcing them and becoming a distraction for others. As Closterman discussed that although these student are adults that does not necessarily mean that they have the right to miss all the class time they want, they should be able to find an ideal solution. A student who just doesn’t come to class is already punishing themselves for the simple fact that they are not really learning what the teacher or professor is teaching to the rest of the students. I don 't believe that a student should be penalized even more if they decide to miss days of class.…

The study of class attendance in correlation with student grades was also statistically significant in determining the level of student performance. The research demonstrated the lack of attendance was significant in explaining why a student would receive a D for a course grade rather than an A, B, or C.(Chan) Statistics showed that regular attendance was a significant determinant in minimizing a student’s chance of getting a D or an F.(Chan) The same data was used to determine the relative impact of each absence in the student’s final grade for a particular course. Results showed absence from a class was statistically significant in lowering the grade of the typical student.…

Finding new ways to persuade students to be present to class is vital for the administration. Eliminating one day per week could be enough to motivate the students to attend class more frequently. As a consequence to this solution, the attendance policy would be more strict, fewer days would be allowed to miss, and classes would be longer. Every class Monday-Thursday would be an hour and thirty minutes long, instead of having fifty minute classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and an hour and a half classes on Tuesday and Thursday. Nevertheless, with a four-day school week, students would be able to fit more activities in on their three day break for friends and family, relaxation, and job responsibilities.…
