Should College Students Attend Classes

Some college students might often lack the motivation to attend their classes. While professors can be different, the outcome of a student not going to class will not change; the consequences will always only affect the student. Therefore, the student should be able to decide himself or herself whether they should go to class or not. At the same time, college professors may enforce an attendance rule, but forcing a student to come to class when they absolutely do not want to be there could be a waste of their time. If a student is forced to attend class, but they completely shut out anything the professor is teaching that would not be beneficial for the student in any way. If the student happens to be an auditory and intrapersonal leaner then the student is probably more comfortable in a classroom with a professor that lectures. On the other hand, if the student is an interpersonal learner then they would probably prefer a class that has a lot of group discussions. Some intrapersonal learners might not be capable of learning in a class that has a lot of group discussions, and some interpersonal learners might not be capable of learning in a class that is pure lecturing. Giving a student the option to come to class could make them more responsible as a person and could allow them to prioritize their educational needs. If a student’s priority is to obtain high grades then they will more than likely attend class regularly. On the contrary, required attendance does not guarantee high grades. If the professor happens to teach everything straight from the book, requiring attendance would be foolish because the student could study the exact same material in the comfort of his or her own home. If the professor chose to add information of their own to teach and include on tests then the amount of students willing to come to class would more than likely be higher. Requiring attendance will only make students present; it does not make them learn. They could be in class and only hear what the professor is saying, but not actually learning or understanding the material. All in all, mandatory attendance is not an effective way of helping students learn. With the technology that is available today, professors could find ways to help students learn outside of the classroom whether it is sending lectures, assigning class discussions online, or assigning students to do programs that cover the material the professor
