Romantic relationships are ideal. Some people watch romantic movies with happy endings and wish that it could be their fairy tale life. For an example to find a loving spouse to grow old with, your college sweetheart, that would be absolutely perfect to some. Many people do not think of the hard work that comes together to make what appears to be the perfect relationship. Young couples face a challenge and that is trying to reach the fairy tale endings we see at the end of a hopeless romantic movie. Sometimes the individual being abused is unaware of the abuse that they are undergoing themselves. Many do not see the abuse, because they become used to it. Abuse goes unrecognized, because it is normalized (Miller). When the abuse has occurred over a period of time it may be hard for one to notice that they are being abused if it is not physical. Both partners may become abusive within the relationship without realizing that they were causing abuse to their partner (Miller). It becomes harder to leave someone when you have committed yourself to that individual. Leaving an abusive relationship transpires over time. It is not a process that happens overnight. When deciding to leave an abusive relationship the individual goes through a series of stages. The stagers are as follows: pre-contemplation, in which an individual does not intend to enact change any time soon, contemplation in which a problem’s existence is acknowledged and change is considered, preparation, in which people develop a plan to make change, action in which people implement their change plans, and maintenance, in which individuals work to reinforce and sustain their implemented changes (Eckstein).
Effects of Abuse in Relationships
After being in an abusive relationship an individual may suffer from a few issues. Abuse within relationships can cause health problems to individuals. A health problem that may be caused by abusive relationships is depression (Whitton). When an individual is experiencing depression it may be hard for them to focus on daily activities such as working, college, errands, etc… Other issues may develop such as self-esteem issues or the individual may be afraid to get involved with another
