In social groups such as stated, they are all close and have and support each other no matter the situation. Groups such as these have some sort of secrecy that allows them to hide deviant behavior in order to maintain their reputation. As Schwart & DeKeseredy (1997) state, “this secrecy tells violent men that their actions are not wrong.” Not only are athletes and fraternity brothers promoting rape but as well approving other terrible acts. When men are dating women who challenge their power, or refuse to gratify them sexually, their friends tell them to sexually, physically, and psychologically mistreat these women (Schwart & DeKeseredy, 1997). This is where hyper-masculinity decides to kick in and violence and danger are seen to come. Men tend to believe that violence is manly and exciting and their teammates and or brothers encourage the act of it, which in return they gain a sense of power over women. Rana Sampson, author of “Acquaintance Rape of College Students,” believes that administrators’ insufficient responses are due to a fear that the incident will damage the university’s reputation. But, they have the power to help stop sexual assaults with requiring students to take a class on rape and offer support as well. Since these incidents bring a great deal of attention, why not show the positive outcomes instead of the negative? My solution would require the administration to put forth funds to help give the proper education to the students of their university.
