Over the past several years, the huge rise of suicides among teenagers that have been a responses to online threats, rumors and hurtful communications, have brought a national attention to the issue of using electronic media to bully other people. Cyberbullying is a world wild phenomenon, which gained its popularity over the past 10 years. This is a community issue that could affect everyone and the consequences of such actions could be even fatal. The first thing that may comes to mind when I am writing about this might be “What exactly cyberbullying is?”. In many cases most of the victims get out of the world of cyberbullying by killing themselves and about 4400 young people commit suicide each year, according to The National Youth Violence Prevention Recourse Center and one example for that is Megan Meier. Megan Meier was just 13 years old when in 2007 she committed suicide because she was victim of a cruel cyberbully, the interesting thing about this case is that Megan firstly informed her parents that she is a victim of cyberbullying, but obviously this is not the most effective way as many people think it is. Although her parents could not help her, after her death they are trying to help to the other millions children out there who are victims, just like their daughter was. They created the foundation called “Megan Meier foundation” and are trying to successfully prove to the American government how important is cyberbullying to be criminalized. In 2009 California introduced the “Megan Meier Cyber bullying Prevention Act.”, which had to end the world of cyberbullying– but unfortunately it was not accepted and the family never got their justice. That case has brought a national attention to the issue and some of the Seattle public schools created a project, which was basically writing letters to the school principals and teachers in which the students are sharing the story of Megan and how important for them is the criminalization of cyberbullying and to be more discussed at school. Many of the teachers were impressed by this project and one of them even decided to create own organization called “Stop. Block. Tell.”, which is again fighting for the criminalization of cyberbullying.
