The Glass Menagerie play took place in the year of 1937, and Amanda Wingfield is trying to sustain her family from selling magazines through the phone on various cold, chilling winter days and nights. As morning comes, Amanda is known for getting up bright and early, as well as waking up everyone in her household. Times were tough in 1937 as the Great Depression was overwhelming many American families and finding an economical way to support each family was wearing down on people.

Consequently, times were so tough that Amanda tended to dwell on the past because those were the times when times were simple, when she was young and beautiful, and had many “gentlemen callers” as the play states. Living in the south after your husband has left you in the 1930’s was exceptionally difficult for the woman’s left in the household. Therefore, Amanda lived in a world of reality and illusion, yet that didn’t prevent her from strengthening and developing into the character that was displayed on The Glass Menagerie. Although her husband did leave her, Amanda admits that she did love her husband, no matter what he had put her through. Amanda knows the importance of having a gentleman caller in the society that they live in therefore she want her daughter, Laura, to find her man, even with her disability, that she comments that it was nothing more than a simple physical injury that she can overcome. Discovering that her son, Tom, was going to leave her to find and seek adventures just as his father has had, and Amanda gets very exasperated with the fact that she keeps on driving the man in her life away. As a mother, she only wants the best for her children and not to suffer what she has suffered
