The great debate of the NBA in the 1960s centered around two men who revolutionized the game of basketball in their own contrasting and unique ways. Bill Russell was a quiet warrior with unparalleled intensity. His primary concern was whether or not his team won. Everything else was secondary. Wilt Chamberlain was a once-in-a-generation athlete with an ability to seemingly score at will.…
The poem “Ex-Basketball Player” by John Updike chronicles the life and daily routine of the former high school basketball standout, Flick Webb. The speaker leads the reader on a journey through Flick’s life, starting with the main road in the town, progressing to Flick’s low end jobs, and then finishing with his habits. Flick was once the best basketball player in the area. However, he has since fallen from stardom and now he just “sells gas, checks oil, and changes flats.” (l. 19-20) Personification is also used when the narrator asserts that "the ball loved Flick".…
The message/life lesson the author is trying to send the reader is to never give up on your dreams, no matter how much you failed at it. The Never-Ending Battle June 14, 1998, Michael Jordan, arguably the greatest basketball player of all time capped off his championship run. Despite not playing basketball just three years earlier, he still managed to win three consecutive championships starting the year after he made his return to the NBA. His killer mentality and unrivaled work ethic are often discussed when speaking of him, but something that possibly shaped that mindset at an early age is not. Michael Jordan, the greatest Chicago Bull of all time, was cut from his high school's varsity basketball team. Following not making the team Jordan worked relentlessly; often stating whenever he got tired a picture of the list he was not on appeared in his head.…
Through you Kobe looked out over the horizon as the Colorado sun began to set and wondered if his feeling of helplessness and lost hope would ever seize to exist. It was December 7th, 1997, “it has only been 7 months” he thought out loud to himself. Kobe sat on the ledge of the cliff, missing his father more and more each day, he missed his laugh and the way he smiled at his son every time Kobe scored in a basketball game, he missed fishing with his father, and watching football on Sunday afternoons, but most of all he missed his best friend. Kobe had begun to struggle in school and sports, his family and friends were worried about him and Kobe was quiet, he sat isolated at lunch and never spoke during practice. Coach Wooden, in this reading, teaches me and many others who read how you can’t just wish for success, being successful is something you have to work at every day. Also, not only working everyday like getting more practice and more repetition, that is not what Coach Wooden is trying to teach here he teaches that being successful comes from inside. He explains how in order to be successful you have to have traits like loyalty, self control, confidence, cooperation, and of course skill. Reading about Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success is really something I agree with 100%, I am not sure if it is because I am also an athlete so I am able to relate to his motivation and his way of words. I mainly agree, because he is right about all that he says everything he mentions in the pyramid are all things you not only need to be a successful athlete, but to be a successful person which is why I agree with what Coach Wooden has to say so much, because anyone can read this book and learn from it not just…
The Human Shaped Bubble: Exploring Your Potential If you’ve read some of my past articles discussing meditations based on Tibetan Buddhist Tantric practices, specifically the role modeling or healing mentor meditation practice, I use Loizzo’s notion of a human shaped bubble emerging after dissolving the ordinary body during this guided meditation practice. This dissolution of the body and reemergence as embodied openness (human shaped bubble) allows for the meditator to completely change their orientation to challenges and obstacles. At times, I give instructions as seeing the newly emerged self as a powerful, flexible and expansive being. I like to think of it as losing the limited sense of self or the small self and trading it in for the…

I was now playing on a select team and also on a premier club team. I was feeling great. Two weeks prior to the start of soccer season, I broke my ankle playing indoor soccer. I was overcome with more disappointment than imaginable.…
The article, “Practice Doesn’t Make Perfect” by Maria Konnikova, believes and argues the opposite of what most people accept to be true, that practicing something can only get someone so far and that practice alone can never make someone perfect. Maria reported on her interview with a psychology teacher named Zach Hambrick who said he spent at least a thousand hours of practicing golf as a young adult hoping to make it to the PGA, but instead found himself not making the cut for his college golf team. Maria proposes that there are many other factors that play a role in helping someone become extremely talented, or even a professional, in various activities and hobbies in life other than just purely practice. Contrary to popular belief, Maria,…
