The Conjuring and the Return of True Horror
In a world where people enjoy fear as a form of entertainment, the new film series The Conjuring by James Wan, released in July 2013, marks the glorious return of horror. Bringing back the classic ghost story with a touch of perfection, James Wan tells us the terrifying real story about the Perrons family, Ed and Lorraine Warran in a haunted Rhode Island farmhouse during the 70s. With the special support and consult from the real Perron sisters and Lorraine Warren, who is now 86 years old, director James Wan and the filmmakers were able to create a film inspired by the actual case files and recordings dealing with their haunting experience. However, the 1970s spooky settings with a scratchy 150-year-old farmhouse on a two-hundred acres’ land do manage to turn this fact-based haunted house horror film into a high standard horror movie under James Wan’s direction, screenwriters Chad and Carey Hayes, and their phenomenal film crew. Compared to James Wan’s previous productions Saw (2004) and Insidious (2010), the camera work and cinematography, as well as the production designer’s use of light and editing, Wan’s craft has improved …show more content…
For most of the movie’s credit, it helps to have a tremendously professional cast. If it wasn’t for the great acting skills and wonderful chemistry between the actors, I doubt The Conjuring would have had this success. The characters’ thoughts and internal complexities are established skillfully and appropriately. Cast by Taylor and Livingston, the Perrons parents bring a sense of love and enormous empathy to their role as they work together to battle the supernatural. Their fear and emotions are invested with just the right balance, neither under- nor over-reacting, that really sell the scares. Even though The Conjuring only vaguely mentions the history behind the Warrans family (which is promised to be explained in full details in the sequel The Conjuring 2), the Warrans couple’s dedication to saving the demon afflicted elevates the picture with Wilson and Farmiga’s skillful incarnations. Along with the five young actresses who are also unbelievably skilled in acting possessed, The Conjuring cast members deliver excellent performances, turning a basic ghost story of a haunted house into one of the highest-grossing horror films of all time, over $318 million worldwide from its $20 million

When you think about a horror film, usually there is a lot of blood and gore involved but this film stayed away from the norm and took more of a realistic approach. There were no special effects to try and scare the viewers or anything of that nature. The director used real life events that could occur to grab the attention of the audience in a creepy way. There were a lot of dark undertones used as well as spooky sounds and an eerie soundtrack. In looking at the cinematography, there was a lot of fading in and out of the camera to exaggerate the horror in the film.…

When analysing Hitchcock’s Psycho, it is clear why it has been labelled as a horror. Although Norman Bates is not a monster in the physical form, his monster-like nature is within his human psyche. There are many reasons for this film to be regarded as a “horror”, the imagery of the old dark house is typical of “horror”, being set in an isolated place, off the beaten track presents a clearly gothic setting where as little as the appearance of a single woman unleashes forces of sexual assault, murder and incest. The feeling of being alone and isolated during a horrific situation creates tension as well as suspense within its audience, in Psycho the isolated setting brings a sense of fear mainly through the idea of the unknown. Isolated settings…
