Citizens can be easily influenced by the recommendation of celebrities, because in modern day society we are very attentive towards the media, therefore this can create an unfair and biased system. Farrington, the illustrator of this cartoon, is emphasizing the lack of motivation of average Americans to vote and follow politics, and he most likely is in support of mandatory voting. Other supporters of this illustration would be people who believe in the principle of mandatory voting and following politics and those who agree with the policies of enfranchisement. These supporters may feel that mandatory voting should be legitimized because throughout history people have worked so hard to obtain the rights we have today, such as universal suffrage, and we should not disregard those rights due to lack of effort and motivation. Within the cartoon he shows how citizens within the state of Wisconsin are “absent” in the voting process. He emphasizes the lack of motivation that citizens, not only within Wisconsin but America as well, have towards the voting process. Citizens do not recognize themselves with either political parties and this is evident through Heller’s illustration of the checkmark on the “whatever” category in which citizens state whether they are democrats or republicans. The use of “whatever” and “it’s raining? (forget it!)” proves how citizens within society today simply do not care and will avoid voting if an opportunity presents itself. The man who is sleeping represents the lazy, apathetic American, who would rather sleep than go out and vote. His name represents how he is “absent” in the process of voting and does not care about politics because he feels it will have no effect on his life. He does not recognize which political party he supports, therefore when he goes to vote he will most likely vote for a political candidate just by randomly choosing. His address represents his indifference towards the candidates. The objects he has chosen to bring, his “wallet, shirt, and brain” show his unpreparedness.
