Can evil exist without good? Evil cannot exist without good because they are the structure of humanity and existence. Good and evil coexist together, and if you simply get rid of one you also take away the other. If there was only good, and no evil, it would not necessarily be considered good. Society would just view it as normal because there would be nothing to compare our actions to. The world is all about opposites. For instance, yin and yang (dark and light), one cannot exist without the other. Yin and yang describes how opposites actually complement and interconnect in the natural world. Beowulf is a stronger and heroic warrior but is still human with sins. “Of the seven deadly sins, theologians and philosophers reserve a special place for pride. Lust, envy, anger, greed, gluttony and sloth are all bad, the sages say, but pride is the deadliest of all, the root of all evil, and the beginning of sin” (Dyson). Throughout the poem, Beowulf shows large amounts of pride. He likes to show the whole world how valuable and important he is to them. Before he even fights Grendel, Beowulf boasts about himself to all the people in the mead hall about his accomplishments. He describes how he killed sea creatures and drove five great giants into chains. After battling with the monster his pride skyrockets. Since he was the first human to kill Grendel he is automatically considered a hero. Beowulf’s kennings describe him as “the mighty protector of men” and “Edgetho’s brave son.” Killing Grendel’s mother is the next task he takes. When fighting, he realizes that she is one of the strongest forces he has ever fought against. Since he has such an amazing reputation that he can’t ruin. Beowulf decides to use the enchanted sword forged by giants to kill Grendel’s mother. King Hrothgar begins to warn him but Beowulf’s pride consumes him, leading him to do more and more dangerous challenges. Many years later Beowulf’s land was being destroyed by a dragon and at this point his pride was at its peak. Due to aging his combat abilities weren’t as good as they used to be.
