As Tony Horwitz described it, “the largest hunk of exposed granite in the world, the dome shaped mountain poked up from Atlanta’s wooded perimeter like a very, very bald man in a crowd.” At Stone Mountain there is a Confederate memorial that lies on the northern side of the mountain. This memorial has three Confederate figures on their best horses facing towards the North-East. These three Confederate figures from the Civil War era are Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis. These men were chosen based on their efforts in the Civil War and to show the remembrance of those who had lost their lives in battle.

In 2015, Jess Engebretson expresses Stone Mountain has become part of a heated debate, nationally; including the Confederate monument itself and Confederate flags. Engebretson goes into the shooting in Charleston, South Carolina and why the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) wants the monument removed, completely.
