The Flag has come to be recognised as a symbol of the American South. It came into use at the time of the American Civil War, from 1861-65, which was triggered by the issue of slavery. Seven southern states rebelled over President Abraham Lincoln’s anti-slavery legislation and declared secession from the United States.The display of flags used by and associated with the Confederate States of America (1861–1865) has continued, without long interruption, into the present day, with the "Southern cross" used in the battle flag of General Robert E. Most people hate the Confederate Flag because of how the african americans were treated.Since the end of the Civil War, African americans as well as others have regarded the confederate flag as a symbol of hatred and racism.Over the years it has not been uncommon to see news reports on television that showed confederate battle flags waved by members of the Ku Klux Klan,A group of white supremacists. Opponents of a dark period in the nation’s history,when slavery of African Americans was legal.After the war ended, the symbol became a source of Southern pride and heritage, as well as a remembrance of Confederate soldiers who died in battle. For years, the state flags of Georgia and Mississippi include images of the Confederate Battle flag.In South Carolina, the battle flag flew atop the state capitol dome right next to the state’s official flag.But in Georgia in the 1990’s black citizens wanted to know why a symbol they considered racist should be allowed to fly over the state government’s buildings.And after several years of debate,black leaders convinced the state legislature to adopt a new flag.
