In many southern states the Confederate flag is still flown proudly today. The flag was used by the rebellious South when they seceded from the Union. They did this because they were unhappy with their state’s rights and the near end of slavery. This flag should no longer be displayed on public property. This is because the Confederate flag was used by racist groups like the KKK, it makes African Americans feel unsafe, and it the heritage that comes from the flag is indistinguishable from the hate towards African-Americans. The first reason that the Confederate flag should not be flown in public is that the racist group known as the KKK, or Ku Klux Klan, used it as their symbol. These people believed that all black people were inferior beings to the white man. When they gathered, they brandished the Confederate flag as their symbol. Many African-Americans were treated horribly by these white-supremacists under this flag. One example of this is when Mike Hill, an African American, went to a Nascar racing event in the south. There, he encountered many pleasant people. One nice couple even invited him to come into their house to eat. Hill ended up turning down their courteous offer. This was because the couple’s trailer was flying the Confederate flag. “ If I felt like if I went in I may not have made it back out. Because while their faces read I like you, the symbol flapping in the wind screamed, I hate your kind” (Video Source 1). Hill and many other African Americans do not feel safe around people who fly these flags. They are uncomfortable and feel like they may be risking their lives.
