Final Reflection Essay

The concluding paragraph is the grand finale to writing a paper. They have the power to make professors stop and think “wow, that was an overall strong paper” or “wow, that went downhill quick.” After writing my essays this semester for Writing 102, I believe that my conclusions most likely evoked the second response. Usually my conclusions tend to stray off-topic, or when I attempt to write a creative opening sentence in my conclusion, it does not relate to my paper at all; therefore, it leaves readers with confusion. During Writing 102, I learned that not all conclusions need to be creative and elaborate because usually a simple and concise conclusion will serve the purpose.

I found this to be successful when outlining my multimodal project, an Odyssey Online-style article. Although the multimodal was not necessarily a written essay, I felt as if the multimodal was properly concluded because it served a clear purpose of indicating to readers that it was the end of the article. Since the purpose of multimodal was to be entertaining, I knew that the ending needed be just as entertaining, if not more entertaining, than the rest of the article. The conclusion of my multimodal included a quote from the show, Seinfeld, and discussed the consequence if college students did not score well on their finals. I chose the Seinfeld quote because it served as light humor of not performing well on exams, but also served as motivation of why students should prepare for all of their exams. Since the description of the quote discussed life after finals week, the quote chronologically fits as the conclusion. Another reason I believe I did not struggle as much as usual with the ending of my multimodal was because the Seinfeld quote was one of the first quotes I found when outlining each of the multimodal slides, and I knew I would incorporate it as the ending quote as soon as I discovered it. As a result, I based the middle slides and quotes with the conclusion in

The Walton Arts and Ideas Series did not look as something that would interest me, but Rick Bragg definitely proved me wrong. Listening to Rick Bragg talking about Southern identity and self-image was a pleasant experience. Besides, his delivering skills were very good and able to catch the audience attention. Indeed, it is not just the funny experiences he told that day, but also how he told them which made the whole speech a worthwhile one. Therefore, it is pertinent to analyze the strengths and the weaknesses of Bragg’s speech to learn from the good techniques he applied and to understand the weaknesses.…

This critical reflective account will discuss the development of me as a leader and manager within my health profession and my team, over the course of The Mary Seacole Programme. I have identified my leadership strengths and my personal development. This course has encouraged me to reflect upon my vision and style of management, and has allowed me to further identify areas that I will need to enhance into making me a more versatile leader. Part 1 Developing my leadership skills is important for me given the circumstances that as a first time leader whose job role previously didn’t involve having a team managed by myself, to a position now who manages or interact extensively with staff and patients daily, therefore during my time undertaking…

In my third draft it was a long drawn out paragraph that wasn’t terrible, but I wanted a stronger ending. Just like at the end of a speech you want to end with something that will be thought about or remembered, I wanted to end my paper with a strong finish. It helped separate the two thoughts, and it also made for a more direct conclusion paragraph. A little detail that I thought about when editing the last time is my use of the same words over and over again, I noticed that I was using a lot of the same phrases over and over again which made my writing choppy and monotonous so I went through and changed some of these things up so that it read smoothly and had a less monotonous tone to the writing.…

What I wish I had done differently is referenced the video more considering it was an analysis of a TED Talk. While being an evaluation of a video, I was also supposed to explain how the speaker incorporated ethos, logos, and pathos but I feel as though I did not mention those factors enough. An example of my lacking mention of the rhetorical appeals is when I say, “Notes were taken of discovered that supported the claims made by Robinson and how that knowledge will play a role in ethos, logos, and pathos.” There is not much that I would change about this paper except a few subtle things. I integrated personal changes in my methods of writing this particular paper such as, taking my time on developing the content and resources.…

As a writer one of the strengths I find, is the ability to know how to word things. Although, sometimes my work doesn’t always sound good, it does when I take the time and apply myself. A challenge I face in writing includes, introductions, and conclusions, also being able to write a lot about something. I did however, learn how to properly write an intro and conclusion in this course.…

One of the essays that had a powerful conclusion is Deborah Tannen’s essay But What Do You Mean? Tannen ends her essay, which was about how women and men have different ways of speaking and areas of miscommunication, by stating that there is no “right” way to talk. She also says that when you want to get your message across, you should use language that is shared- or understood by all in the conversation. I really enjoyed this conclusion because it has the ability to leave a lasting impression on the reader.…

My writing experience: I didn’t start to read until I was in first grade. Every week we would go to library to check-out two books and take a test on the books we read on a computer. Every day in English we read a short story to ourselves then we would play games dealing with the story to make it fun. To be honest I never really did a lot of writing in Elementary , Middle, or High school so I can’t pinpoint when I started writing. In essay writing I learned its always good to express yourself with your own opinion.…

In two essays following my entrance essay, thesis statements became my biggest issue. I received a ninety on my entrance essay, so naturally I assumed that any future essay would only get better. This was not the case for me at all because instead of improvement, I regressed. The only way to correct my problem was to find the issue and figure out a resolution. Over the course of the semester, I have become aware that I still need to learn to write complete, specific, and fully developed thesis statements.…

Throughout the semester, I was required to write essays for EN 101. In previous years, I wrote mostly the same style of essays, however, this semester I was required to write many different styles of essays. Thus, I was forced to leave my comfort zone for writing and to challenge myself, which in turn helped to improve my writing. My essays that I have wrote for EN 101 demonstrate that I have improved in supporting my thesis, keeping the paper organized, and creating better conclusions.…

    6. To create a good conclusion, your speech hopefully had well-spoken three main points. The conclusion reviews why your topic is important, the main points and will leave the audience with a new way of thinking or a task to complete. We remember best what we hear last, so a good conclusion needs to be written to almost perfection, including wrapping up loose ends that may have been left in the speech, showing your passion or commanding the audience to take action. If your speech was well performed and organize, usually a conclusion will fall into place and easily be produced from restating main points and calling your audience to action.…

Decorum is a strategy of ethos in which you attempt to fit in with the audience by meeting their expectations by dressing and talking the way they expect. This makes them feel comfortable with the persuader. You must change your decorum based on your audience’s expectations because you want to make them feel comfortable to be able to move people away from their current opinion. In addition, different audiences have different expectations of you, so you must meet each one by changing your decorum.…

The thesis statement is a very, very important part of the essay. In their book entitled, Writing: A College Handbook" James Heffernan, John Lincoln, and Janet Atwill clearly explains the following: "A statement of thesis answers your exploratory question and expresses the main point of your essay my making a precise, specific assertion about the topic. A thesis statement expresses your unique insight or way of explaining a subject and often forecasts how you will develop and organize your text." A good thesis statement will lead right into the introduction. "The introduction comes first for the reader, but not necessarily first for the writer.…
