Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
According to Maslow, there are minimum of five basic needs. These five basic needs are physiological, safety, love, esteem, and self-actualization. The Physiological needs are the most basic needs – such as need for food and shelter. The Safety needs appear only after the physiological needs have been satisfied to some extent, Maslow explains that the safety needs are most obvious in infants and young children, a child will feel unsafe for reasons such as injustice, unfairness or inconsistency in the parents. The Love needs appear only after the physiological and the safety needs have been accomplished, person will feel the need to belong and the need for affection. It is necessary that the management ensure that the employees strive to accomplish their higher level needs instead of lower-level needs and thus the employees and subordinates become self-actualized. The theory is valuable, because it helps managers identify what they need to do to help the workers in achieving self-actualization. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs can be interpreted into the workplace setting in a simple way – starting with wages and benefits being the lower-level needs and secure income, teamwork, respect and achieving career goals being on the higher levels (Jenkins, 2009). In order for the employees to reach this stage organizations can take subsequent steps which are Maslow’s hierarchy needs applied to the work environment. Recognise employee’s accomplishments, Provide financial security, Provide opportunities to socialize, Promote healthy work force. Promoting healthy work force by encouraging the employees to maintain physical as well as mental health keeps their physiological needs satisfied. Providing financial security is significant in satisfying employee’s safety need. By providing the opportunities to socialize the employee will result in feeling as a part of a team, which improves their overall productivity. If the lower needs are not fulfilled the employee will not become self-actualized and their work productivity will not reach its highest possible state. Money is not a sufficient mean of motivating the employees on its own, instead of purely focusing on motivating the workers by higher amount of money, it needs to be incorporated into the need-satysfying work environment. “This can be done through such means as providing positive feedback, acknowledging the employees skills and efforts, offering opportunities to learn new things, asking open-ended questions, listening actively to the employees, inviting participation in solving important problems, acknowledging the employees’ perspective, and offering choices within the structure of the organization.” The results indicate that the association between motivation and a higher monetary reward is not
