The Concept Of Voting In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding

Modern society chooses their leaders based on their charisma instead of ability. A recent example is the election of Donald Trump, who defeated a much more experienced group of republican politicians in the primary and democratic candidate in the general election in part due to his celebrity status. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding presents conflicts in a democracy the characters create that lacks the traditional constructs of government to prevent the dark side of human nature to prevail.
` Golding presents throughout the novel a pessimistic tone to demonstrate how easily people revert to their primitive instincts when decisions are based on emotion instead of the rule of law. This is illustrated in William Golding’s passage

It is interesting that he would refer to voting as a toy. .Voting is something only democratic societies do . Women didn’t have the right to vote until 1920 and African Americans until 1965. Voting is something special and important. Comparing voting to a toy diminishes its importance and value. Children have a favorite toy until a newer flashier one comes along. Perhaps the author was illustrating that the vote for Ralph was based on emotional rather than a pragmatic decision. Although they voted for Ralph most of them quickly turned to Jack who offered the new shiny toy in the form of hunting and savagery.
Golding introduces the importance of how societies’ mood influences the traits considered important for a leader. The conch was perceived by the boys to represent power and became a powerful symbol which lead to Ralph’s election as leader. Golding utilizes Ralph’s election as a leader and symbolic significance of the conch to illustrate that perception can overshadow reality. The author also suggests that other characteristics as physical appearance plays a very important role in positions of

Throughout Golding's novel the conch was a clear symbol for power amongst the boys, “most powerfully there was the conch” (22), and this was the deciding factor for Ralph being voted chief. The author also discusses the effects of negative characteristics to contrast the characters such as Piggy being overweight for which he is taunted and is shunned by the other boys, “closed circuit of sympathy with Piggy on the outside.”(Golding 21) Golding uses this statement to illustrate how Piggy’s intelligence was overlooked and he is labeled by his appearance. Similarly, Jack is identified by his physical appearance and described as “ugly without silliness” (Golding 20). But because of Jacks craving for power as presented in the meeting which he was going to appoint himself as chief, Jack symbolizes the love of power and attention and self indulgent characteristics which engulf some leaders. This is similar to President Trump who is primarily thinking about himself and not the benefit of the people he is supposed to lead. President Trump has demonstrated this by maintaining influence on his businesses like the golf course in Mar a Largo and hotel in Washington DC using his position for self financial

Ralph's exhilaration of harming the pigs reveals that even he has a savage side to him and failed to recognize this instinct to hunt and kill in himself. The mask of face paint that the hunters wear symbolizes actions without responsibilities. By wearing the paint the boys feel powerful; they feel like they are able to do anything they want. Even some of the other boys “understood only too well the liberation into savagery that the concealing paint brought” (Golding 170).…

With injustice and cruelty running rampant in the world, it is unsurprising that people become determined to make things better for tomorrow. Those aware of the moral greyness of their actions often quote the cliché saying that the ends justify the means. Commendable yet unreasonable, leaders whose sole purpose in life is to fix what they see as “wrong” with the world fall prey to thinking there is only ally or enemy. In the long run, they cause more conflict since they no longer force themselves to hold their principles to same standards as they hold others. This is the downfall of leaders in many works of literature, including Harrison Bergeron and The Lord of the Flies.…

When Lord of the Flies was published in 1954 the novel is considered to be about humans that are inherently evil and when given power, how they choose to use it. Golding demonstrates this through the use of characterization examining Jack and Ralph as individual characters; symbolism is used to illustrate the power in the novel; and lastly, the conflict/dialogue between Ralph, Jack and its effects on the atmosphere. In Golding 's novel Lord of the Flies, he implies that with power comes responsibility and the capability to abuse power or act with righteousness.…

In addition to Piggy, Ralph was also profoundly influenced by the conch. He had an odd connection with the conch because the symbolism of power that the conch had brought came to him in the form of leadership. The conch is what gave him the power to command in the first place. A quote that demonstrated this was when Ralph blew the conch for the first time and the boys had to choose between him and Jack. “...most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch.…

Almost everyone experiences a time in their life when they are certain they are correct and that everyone else is wrong. In William Golding’s book Lord of the Flies, a story about a group of young boys who are stranded on an island, the concept of one sidedness and disagreement between competing groups and people is illustrated multiple times. Through the use of symbolism, setting, and characterization, this book, Lord of the Flies, demonstrates that hunger for power can drive humanity to be blinded by their own opinions and ideas. Symbolism, from the fire as a sign of hope to the Lord of the Flies himself representing fear and imagination, is a very important tool used in this book. “He lifted the conch.…
