A diverse work environment is essential in promoting the goals and expectations of any company. Diversity is a concept that helps reduce discrimination, increases the variety of ideas, and is helpful to incorporate a wide range of perspectives instead of just one class of individuals. “Diversity of employees is nurtured to ensure that the best ideas and talents are utilized to provide for the growth out our business” (as cited in Muir, 1996, p. 476). The concept of diversity is important for any company to implement in order to reach a wider target area because people of different backgrounds can affect and reach a variety of people. Also, diversity in the workplace allows for everyone to be unique and be the person he/she was created to be. …show more content…
Jackson is diverse because of his promotion rate. He has been with the company for four years and two of those years he has been the assistant plant manager. Recently, he has stepped into the plant manager role of the Pittsburg plant where the company is currently taking applications for. Mr. Jackson is different from every other applicant because he has experience at the Pittsburg plant and in the job role. Some many not consider experience as a diverse quality, but in this scenario it plays to Mr. Jackson’s favor. He is familiar with the company, the Pittsburg plant, and more importantly the employees within the Pittsburg plant. He has built relationships with the employees and everyone notices his presence and that makes him a standout candidate in relation to the other applicants. Even though more experience is probably needed for the plant manager position, Mr. Jackson scored well on all aspects of the hiring process and his experience and relationship with the Pittsburg plant cannot be overlooked. By allowing Mr. Jackson the opportunity to fill this position, there would not need to be any transition made, no training needs to be conducted for a new employee, and would provide a diverse management team that is setting the precedent that age is not a
