Courage The dictionary definition of courage is “the ability to do something that frightens one” (courage). But maybe that is not the only definition. The concept of courage is essential to understand the book To Kill a Mockingbird. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee develops the theme of courage throughout the actions of the characters Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, and Boo.
Atticus displays a great deal of courage from the beginning of the book until the very end. He first demonstrates courage when he agrees to take Tom Robinson 's case. Even though he knew that he was not going to win. When Scout asks her father if he thinks that they will win he says no and “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason

It was a rabid dog and was very close to the Radley House (Novels). If he would not have shot dog, it could have harmed his family or neighbors. This scene shows that he is courageous and will do anything to protect his family. Finally, another time Atticus had courage is when he sat outside Tom Robinson’s jail cell alone. He knew that there would most likely be people that would come to harm Robinson, but he had the courage to protect him. Even when he saw the all the cars going there, he did not run or call for help. He does not even panic, when a man said “He in there Mr. Finch? (Lee 172). His response was simply “He is and he’s asleep. Don’t wake him up” (Lee 174). Atticus stood up for what he believed in even though almost everybody else was against him. Another character from To Kill a Mockingbird that displays courage is Mrs. Dubose. She is one of the bravest people in the whole book. After Mrs. Dubose passes away, Atticus tells Jem “Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict. She took it as a pain-killer for years. The doctor put her on it and died without so much agony, but she was too contrary-” (Lee 127). Mrs. Dubose did not want to die with her addiction, so she …show more content…
To Jem and Scout, he was their hero. Boo had not had contact with anyone, but his brother in many years. Boo starts to recognize that the kids play in front of his house and assembles the courage to leave the kids small items in the tree. One night when Mr. Ewell attacks Jem, Boo saved him and carried him home. This is one of the bravest things that Boo has ever done. “You never understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” Boo left the safe environment of his home to risk his life for hers, and she knows that his essential goodness and vulnerability need protecting” (Felty). He even stays to talk to Mr. Finch and the county sheriff, Mr. Tate. He also hold scouts hand which was also brave of him because he hasn 't had much human contact. Scout says “Mr. Arthur, bend your arm down here like that. That’s right, sir” (Lee 320). He displays courage because he could have stayed in his house and ignored because he has been inside his house for so many years. He decided to be courageous and save
