The first concept I will be talking about is Conformity. Conformity can be defined as “yielding to group pressure” (Crutchfield, 1955). This often happens when a group viewpoint are different, and you change your beliefs and behavior to match …show more content…
The concept of Roleplaying states that “people tend to internalize the roles that they are currently playing and will change their attitudes to fit their current roles” (sparknotes, 2014). The experiment we will be looking at for this concept will be the Stanford Prison Experiment. In this experiment 24male participants were divided into two groups, either prison guards or prisoners. (Jaffe, Banks, Haney, & Zimbardo, 1971). The prisoners are brought to the simulation jail one by one and was systematically searched (Jaffe, Banks, Haney, & Zimbardo, 1971). They were then given a number to replace their names which deindividualized them (Jaffe, Banks, Haney, & Zimbardo, 1971). The guards on the other hand, were allowed to do anything they wanted within the simulated prison as long as it maintained law and order (Jaffe, Banks, Haney, & Zimbardo, 1971). Soon after, prisoners were awaken by the guard for a count which served the function of helping the prisoners familiarize themselves with their number (Jaffe, Banks, Haney, & Zimbardo, 1971). After several days, it was found out that the guards had quickly escalated their punishment by increasing the amount of count and pushup along with humiliating them by having them clean the toilet bowl with their bare hands (Jaffe, Banks, Haney, & Zimbardo, 1971). A priest soon visited to talk to them and it was found that half the prisoners …show more content…
Schema is defined as a “cognitive framework or concept that helps organize and interpret information” (Cherry, What Is a Schema?, 2014). This mean that how we think about our self will determine our behavior. For example if we think we like a clean environment, we would be more willing to volunteer to help in beach cleanup duty. The experiment I will be using to explain schema is the Bransford and Johnson experiment. In this experiment, some participants were given a paragraph of words that did not make much sense to them, while others were given a picture to accompany the paragraph, which helped them make sense of what the words in the paragraph meant (Brandford & Johnson, 1972). A third group only saw the picture after the paragraph while a fourth group only saw part of the picture (Brandford & Johnson, 1972). It was found that the picture was most effective on the group who had seen the picture before the paragraph (Brandford & Johnson, 1972). This showed that in a sense, the picture acted like a schema, where it helped the participants to understand what the paragraph was about. This showed me that schema helps us interpret our perceptions of things and a positive or negative schema can affect our behaviors about certain things or issues. This mean that how we think can affect our
