Definition Essay-What Is Art?

Great Essays
Artist Edgar Degas defined art as being: “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see” (Le French 1). In other words, any artist can create something and call it a “piece of art,” but it does not represent any significance if no one can become inspired by it or see the purpose behind it. However, what then would be considered “art” and how would you describe it? A common answer to people is that there is no one particular meaning or that the imagination is endless. Though, true, I personally find that for anything to be exactly “art,” whether physically or virtually, it has to send a message, resonate an effect, or even catch the eyes of others. For example, let 's say that someone’s own work or creation is considered “art” …show more content…
In its initial release, this virtual augmented reality game went beyond any viewer 's imagination that only seemed possible in movies. Although its motives seem bizarre and incomprehensive, the hidden message behind the efforts are in fact quite astonishing and worthwhile-- particularly, its major goals indicate the means to exercise and meet new people. Not only does this signify the underlying truth that there is more to see in the world, but also we should explore it with a new perspective bit-by-bit that will only go a long way in the future. Basically, the effect that ushers along the line is that these unexpected things, whether real or virtual, have a tendency to be overlooked as not …show more content…
Throughout my life, I struggled with losing weight, which led to a constant series of depression and anxiety. I would go days of wasting my hours sitting and moping around in my bed, wishing to lose weight by simply starving myself but not doing anything productive. Needless to say, the introduction of Pokémon Go was not something I fathomed and approved of at first. I became conflicted on whether or not I should give in and attempt to at least try the game out, especially since I played almost all the Pokémon installments leading up to this point. As I gradually but cautiously dove into the game headfirst, I soon found myself to be what some would say “addicted.” Rather than sitting at home and doing nothing, I began to go on late night adventures to catch Pokémon all the while being productive to my body. Along the way, I met many new trainers who became my friends and even tagged along with me during some of my late night Pokémon hunts. The fact that Pokémon Go brought me out of from my comfort-zone and into places I’d never expect to find myself makes it an “art” that should be well-resonated amongst others as well. Essentially, we all felt the need to go out and explore the world and catch Pokémon without really paying attention to the small hidden messages presented before us. In a way, this artwork

Gamers are frequently misunderstood because people who do not play video games seldom recognize the innumerable benefits of gaming. The reality is that there are countless positive effects of gaming on those who participate, including the ability of gamers to seamlessly interact with other gamers, the notion that games allow people to be themselves, the fact that games have the potential to help gamers accomplish things that they would be unable to accomplish in real life, the belief that video games offer opportunities for acceptance, and the fact that many games promote a positive message. A great deal of people find it extremely difficult to make social connections in the real world, because they are simply uncomfortable…

It is functional and nonfunctional, therefore certain art elements, such as texture and aesthetics give life and meaning or triumph and mischief to one’s artwork. For me, art is expression, and the collection of beauty. I can relate this meaning of art as a collage. These can be words, pictures, and/or drawings. An artist can put in whatever they feel is necessary to add more or less to the collage.…

In “Fully Destructible: Exploring a Personal Relationship with Nature through Video Games,” Nik Harron discusses how video games can be a valid tool for learning about our world, how it works, and our effect on it as humans. He begins the article by making mention of the side of the argument that video games are impeding our ability as a culture to connect with one another and build community, while admitting that “video games have both positive and negative aspects.” (par. 3). He then dives into the positive effects and uses that video games can have by explaining his personal experiences with three games called “Proteus”, “Flowers” and “Minecraft,” expressing in great detail what each game consists of, and how they can be used as tools to…

What is art and what art is have been very controversial topics of discussion for centuries. Art is a very opinionated subject, and many people tend to share different views when it comes to art. To this day, we still do not have one solid, universally agreed upon definition of art. This makes it very hard to decide what is art, and what is not, considering we do not have a perfectly correct guideline to follow. Philosophers and artists have been sharing their beliefs on the argument of art for a very long time now.…

According to the text Living with Art by Mark Getlein, there are six primary roles that artists fulfill in society: artists “create places for some human purpose” (i.e. monolithic art as Stonehenge, Gobeki Tepe, churches, etc..), artist “create extra-ordinary versions of ordinary objects” (for instance the World’s largest ball of yarn, or Tintoretto’s Last Supper), artists have been used to “record and commemorate” historical events (such as a wedding photographer or Pablo Picasso’s Guernica depicting the carnage of the civil war of Spain), artists give “tangible form to the unknown” (for instance the abstract and cubist movements of the 20th century, or the design of man-made objects), artists “give tangible form to feelings and ideas” ( works…

Freedom is having the right to act, speak, or think as one wants, and having absolute freedom in creating art pieces mean that no one or no authority can censor it. Usually, authorities such as the government tend to censor art pieces at which they deem unfit and unsuitable for the public audience. The act of censoring is unfair for the artists, as it may mean that they do not have the freedom of expression through art, defeating the purpose of the artwork due to the removal of the main items of the art piece. Some artworks may even be censored either partially or totally although the artist did not have the intention to send whichever inappropriate message the authority has inferred from the art piece. However, sometimes authorities do have to censor, which some adults may disapprove of.…

Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
