Beowulf’s journey starts in the ordinary world. He is from Geatland, this is where he first of Grendel. Beowulf and all the other Geates heard stories about all the terror Grendel caused the Danes. On lines 109-122 it says “In his far off home Beowulf, Higlac’s follower and the strongest of the Geats- greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world-heard how Grendel filled nights with horror”

He was able to defeat Grendel but with Grendel’s death, Grendel’s mother came along. Defeating her would be a tougher challenge than Grendel. Beowulf had to defeat her to really save the Danes. Hrothgar knew this so he offered a reward to Beowulf. Lines 446-450 “Seek it, if you dare! Save us, once more, and again twisted gold, headed up ancient treasure, will reward you for the battle you win”
Grendel’s mother was much stronger than Grendel, Beowulf wasn’t able to defeat her without weapons. Neither was his sword. Beowulf was able to use the swords of the giants to kill her. Defeating her made him a hero because he really saved the Danes. Lines 523-525 “Her body fell to the floor, lifeless, the sword was wet with her blood, and Beowulf rejoiced at the sight”
No one expected Beowulf to be successful in his battles. They lost faith in him and they stopped waiting for him to come back but they would unknowingly see him once again. Beowulf took Grendel's head back to the king as a trophy. In the end, Beowulf gave his life to protect the Danes and defeat those that threatened them.
