After researching several IT industry certifications that are available I choose to write about the CompTia A+ certification and the Microsoft MCDST certification. Reason being I learned that both of these certifications are considered great entry-level starting points which will kick start my journey into the computer industry. Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTia) was founded in 1982 and it’s made up of resellers, distributors, and manufactures this entry level certification is for individuals interested in becoming a computer service or Desktop support technician. This entry-level certificate is equivalent to having six to twelve months of experience in supporting end users in desktop environments running on the Microsoft Windows operating systems. With this certification you may work on a company’s information technology team, on the help desk like with the CompTia A+ certification. The responsibilities include troubleshooting hardware or software issues, product upgrades, and maybe product training. MCDST certification require passing scores on two exams. Training maybe offered at community colleges, certification training organizations and Microsoft. This certification pairs very well with the CompTiaA+ certifications and even some employers may request for you to obtain both. Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician must be extremely knowledgeable in the Windows based environment, being detailed-oriented and able to identify, troubleshoot and resolve problems quickly which working independently or sometimes as part of a team. The projected outcome of an individual with a bachelor’s degree and professional certifications may have the strongest job opportunities because it is projected that the IT field will increase by 18% or even faster between 2012 and 2022. To become MCDST certified one must pass two core exams: Supporting Users and Troubleshooting a Windows XP Operating System and Supporting Users and Troubleshooting Desktop Applications on a Windows XP Operating System; which will cover content like installation planning, windows XP upgrades, clean installations, unattended installations, troubleshooting systems startup and user logons, managing users, windows environment and many more intensive subject matter.
