Difference Between Legalization And Decriminalization

Deviant behavior and criminal behavior have different implications. A behavior that is deviant is defined as a behavior, belief, or condition that violates significant social norms in the society or group in which it occurs. A criminal behavior is defined as a behavior that violates criminal law and can be punishable by fines, jail terms, and other negative sanctions. The main difference between the two behaviors are the laws that support it and the repercussions that come with it. Deviant behavior is any behavior that can be considered “wrong” by society, it is more of a social construct. Criminal behavior is a behavior that has governed laws behind its implications. These are actions that can be punishable in court. An example of a criminal behavior would be committing a murder and/or inflicting harm on another being. When it comes to legalizing marijuana, states have to ability to either make it a crime punishable by law or a socially acceptable behavior that all citizens can indulge in. Decriminalization is when the sale and manufacturing of marijuana is still considered illegal, but the criminal penalties that are associated with the personal use of the drug are lifted. The sale of marijuana is unregulated by the state. Instead of facing criminal charges, those who are caught using the drug can be charged with civil fines. Legalization is abolishing the laws banning marijuana use and possession for personal use. With legalization, the government can tax and regulate marijuana sales and use. This also permits offenders who were previously caught with small amounts of marijuana to be released from their sentences.
