Malala influenced many around the world when she said, “There's a moment when you have to choose whether to be silent or to stand up”(Mallala 1). The power of one's actions can simply affect the future in a situation. In “The Bet”, the storyline clearly demonstrates the awareness of the power of Actions. Unfortunately, the main characters did not think through the situation before giving up everything they love. Is happiness worth silence, or should one risk everything for the truth? The banker and the lawyer simply fill their lives with extremism and foolishness with a new bet they made without deep thought or discussion. Because of this, both characters will suffer from there decisions and live with it for the rest of their lives. Through conflict, characterization, and irony, “The Bet” by Anton Chekhov demonstrates the theme that one should deeply analyze your actions before acting on them.
