Industry Knowledge Foundational Competency
The foundational competency of industry knowledge includes demonstrating proficiency in maintaining well informed of the growth developments in the industry. A training and development professional proficient in industry knowledge maintains own professional knowledge, keeps abreast of industry changes and trends, and builds industry sector knowledge (Arneson et al., 2013, p. 85). My level of competency in these skills is shown on table 3. In the foundational competency of industry knowledge I consider myself to be at the intermediate level. Adapting to change is extremely important, but especially in the ever-changing field of training and development adaptability is essential for success. In the area of personal skills my competency level is at the intermediate level. I joined the training development group at work when trainings were conducted through face-to-face sessions. As the organization begun the transition phase from face-to-face trainings to distance trainings, I was able to adapt to the change and work with others toward achieving the new goals. I attended instructional design courses to acquire needed skills and gain knowledge I was lacking in course design. During this time I also identified the need for personal development and enrolled in the distance education masters program at UMUC as mentioned earlier. My initiative to further continue my education is an example of modeling personal development. Throughout the transition to distance training at work I have demonstrated initiative and “motivation for continuous learning” (Arneson et al., 2013, p. 89). It involves demonstrating proficiency in using technology and ability in adapting to technology changes. A training and development professional proficient in technology literacy demonstrates awareness of technologies and uses technology effectively (Arneson et al., 2013, p. 90). My level of competency in these skills is shown on table 6. In the areas of demonstrating awareness of technologies and using technology effectively I consider myself to be at an intermediate level of competency. As changes in technology have occurred I have demonstrated “awareness of or comfort with existing, new, and emerging technologies” (Arneson et al., 2013, p. 90). I participated in a technology research group at work during the transition to distance training. Our task was to identify the best authoring tool for the new training program. I conducted research and worked with sample authoring tools before selecting Captivate as the authoring tool for the project.
