The Comparison Trap Analysis

Julie Barnhill states in her article ‘The Comparison Trap’, “every day, everywhere, from every age bracket, and even despite our faith in Jesus Christ, we size each other up, comparing supposed weaknesses and trying to make ourselves feel better by ignoring or brushing off one another” (Barnhill, 2004). When looking at envy this way it seems that this vice is a superficial, unimportant part of life that we just need to deal with. A survey conducted in 2008-2009 asked respondents to rate what they believed to be the deadliest sin to be and envy was rated last with 0% by all respondents, male and female (Capps & Haupt, 2011). Rebecca DeYoung states

Americans are some of the busiest people in the world. From the 18th century to the 19th century, the average citizen only had a few activities, such as eating, sleeping, and farming. With the industrial revolution of the late 1800s, Americans feared the new technology because they thought that machines would obsolete the human race. However, they found new activities and occupied themselves more than before. For example, they could now work in factories and retail stores while learning advanced subjects in college.…

The psychological findings and known information learned from class on consequences and the importance of parents remaining consistent with children disagrees with the opinion of the author from a parenting column in The News-Sentinel. This article discusses how consequences must be unpredictable to be effective with children. Throughout the entire article John Rosemond, the writer, fails to mention any scientific evidence supporting his accusations. Rosemond gives an example of some parents he knows and how they successfully use this technic on how to prevent immunization and the possibility that punishment becomes a game. This example is the “Consequence Grab-Bag”, put 10 consequences in the bag and when misbehavior occurs, children blindly…

Jealousy comes when one's focus is taken off God and put upon the world. Hebrews 13:4 states “but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” God's Word also states in I Corinthians 3:17 “if any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy.” The purity of mankind should be maintained, therefore the jealous husband was to bring her before the priest who would carry out all the law. Devils love the destruction of relations between a man and his wife.…

Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference was my book of choice to discuss in small literature circles. The Tipping Point was my first choice because I have read other pieces of Gladwell’s work and enjoyed his writing style. I found The Tipping Point riveting because Gladwell discusses the algorithm of how epidemics become triggered and take off. I took pleasure in reading the first few chapters, but Gladwell’s writing became repetitive and I became disengaged. I penciled in time into my busy schedule, but reading turned into a chore and sank to the bottom of my to-do list.…

The sixteenth photo I had taken is a photo of a book by the title of “The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell. The reason why I have chosen this photo is because the book has taught me that the little things around us can make a big difference. The seventeenth photo I had taken is a photo of a book called Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich. The reason why I have chosen this photo is because it shows how many people who live in the U.S work full-time are receiving poverty- level wages and the author is just mentioning how can people survive under these conditions.…

    (49) Originally, men feel hatred because of how prosperous other men seem, but these feelings translate into feelings of jealousy and envy. The feeling of anger comes about as men perceive things they do not possess, which later results in feelings of envy because they want things for themselves. Selfishness is an aspect of envy, because envy is the desire for something a man does not obtain, which shows signs of desiring things for one-self rather than being content with what a man has. The desire for things for one’s self-benefit includes the overarching theme of…
