In the passage “The Company Man” by Ellen Goodman a vice president by the name of Phil, a workaholic, an important person in the company who passed away from working himself to death. A 51 year old man who worked 6 days a week from 8 to 9 and had no extracurricular interest outside of work other than golfing once a month. Had a family whom he is barely with. And cared about his company greatly. Phil is a company man who after passing away was ready to be replaced.
8 to 9 for 5 of the 6 days out of the week he worked meant he had no time at home with the exception of the one day off he has. Only given 4 days off in the entire month he dedicates a one free day to golfing. From overworking himself he died from a heart attack the age of 51. Among his workers it was expected due to him working so much. He was referred to as a type a, meaning he dealt with a lot of stress with his work. Even the one day of

When the children were young his wife said that she already missed her husband, meaning that for years he neglected everyone in his family.
Phil had a lot of people working for him, most of them enjoyed working for him. He would worry about work even if he wasn’t at the office. Phil had a chance to become president of the company if the president now had retired or died soon, he knew that because it’s mentioned that 3 of the 6 vice presidents would be moved to the top spot. Referred as a type a, his ambitions may have been to become president of the company he stresses so much about.
Phil is a company man who died of a heart attack, though no one was surprised how he died, he was already being replaced the very same day he passed. The president of the company discreetly started searching for a replacement to take Phil’s place. Asking other employees “who’s been working the hardest,” knowing it would be hard to replace Phil. He wasn’t seen as a family man, or just a regular man, he was a tool for the company that was ready to be
