Karasic (2016) addresses this in his article surrounding the heath of transgender individuals due to these bathroom bills. They single out transgender and gender non-conforming individuals from using public facilities such as bathrooms and locker rooms, and in turn causes discrimination from already groups that get discriminated and harassed. Unlike Wayne State’s accommodation of their transgender population, places that do not are causing exclusion within healthcare coverage, joining the military, and participating in sports. Though exclusion is also in schools, work environments, and public places that reinforce these exclusions. Karasic points out that in the last 2 years, the U.S. government made attempts to protect the transgender community from the discrimination they have been oppressed with for many years from removing the exclusion of transgender surgery from Medicare in 2014 (Karasic, 2016). Other strides of transgender inclusion came from the Macy v. Holder case saying that discrimination of transgender individuals is discrimination based on sex, and the Affordable Care Act removing exclusions that transgender people face when it comes to health insurance throughout the nation. By having spaces that are based on biology, causes gender panics, or penis panics, creating hypothetical scenarios just like the Laylor article where men in women’s only spaces will cause an assault. With Wayne State’s gender inclusive bathrooms it detours away from this ideology what anyone with a penis are predators, and that if they enter a women’s only space those women are threatened with heterosexual violence.
