Clarkston Community Health Center Case Study

Clarkston is a small city in the heart of Atlanta. The city is mostly composed of diverse immigrant populations from different parts of the world who have come either as refugees or on migration that has different races, languages, religions, and other groups. Clarkston Community Health Center is a nonprofit organization that provides free Medical service that runs every Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm. According the website clarkstonhealth.org (2013), it is mostly designed to establish a patient-centered medical home to enhance an economically feasible, culturally and linguistically sensitive continuum of care for all patients including health screening, primary and preventive healthcare to the refugee, needy, underinsured and uninsured population. Although I’m an active volunteer at Clarkston Community Hall, this was my first time volunteering as a nursing student in the Clarkston Community health Center. A 25 years old African American woman originally came from Ethiopia. While taking vital signs, she appeared to be very anxious about her situation. She presented to the clinic with chief complaint of vaginal discharge with foul-fishy smell that started two weeks ago. She stated she had unprotected sex with multiple partners. Based on this, I wondered if she might have a sexually transmitted disease such as positive Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) or Human Immune Virus (HIV) because she came from high HIV prevalence country, had low BMI, and was in the range of high prevalent HIV age group of 18 to 30. I managed this challenge by keeping myself calm and not asking any judgmental questions. I took this patient to the doctor’s examination room and we asked and documented her past medical history, present health history, number of sexual partners, any protective barrier used during sexual activity, and results of previous lab tests to confirm the
