Radioshack Reflection Essay

Base on the Communication Style Inventory, my leadership style is strategic. I used to work to RadioShack for five years. I started as a sale associate for three years then I was promoted to Assistant Manager. My duty is to run the store when my manager isn’t around make sure my co workers are doing their job and train new employee. Working in retail there are new employees come and go almost all the time. I remember back in early 2012 I had to train this new employee his name Jeff. My manager interview him and told me he’s a good guy and he’s willing to learn but I have to be patient with him because he’s a slow learner. Being an assistant manager I’m very open and engaging and persuade my coworker to understand how to make a sell, specially …show more content…
I became more conventional. I stopped making training as exercise and a fun environment and motivate him such as “ oh I believe in you, you can do this job, it’s piece of cake”. It’s become part of a job and I gave me a time of a week to make his first sale in phones or I would have to let him go. Apparently, that style is actually work because he made first sale two days later. He came more engaging and friendly. Looking back I believe I could have done differently than just motivate him and believe in him. I could have been more serious because I was being to friendly and that’s probably why he didn’t take me serious or listen to me. I could have said,” ok, you have a 2 weeks to get me a phone or I would have to ask the manager to let you go”. I think that would have been …show more content…
He’s an investor and a CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. He leads over 300,000 employees with a freedom and incentivizes them like owners. I admire him not only he’s a successful businessman, billionaire but he’s also a philanthropist. To me Warren Buffet is a strategic leader because I was watching one of his interviews on T.V once he has said that his favorite holding period for an investment is forever. Due to his saying, this is why he has been staying with Berkshire Hathaway for a long time he doesn’t plan to retire anytime soon. He has plans and vision to extend his company by purchasing the Burlington Santa Fe trail road because he believes that railroad is an important transportation in America and it wont go away for at least 50-100 years from today. He has spoke about numbers of economic crisis in 2013 because many American companies are leaving America for cheaper labor in Southeast Asia. His famous article in the New York Times “ Buy America. Before delving further into leadership and management theories and styles it is good to understand the difference between a manager and a leader. Bennis and Nanus (1985, p221) state that ‘managers are people who do things right and leaders are people that do the right thing.’ Yukl (2002, p7) goes on to suggest that leadership is the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how it can be done effectively, and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish the shared objectives. However, Stodgill (1974:7) powerfully stated that ‘there are as many definitions of leadership as there are persons who have tried to define it.’ Although there are varying definitions to leadership…

After completing both the DISC and JUNG Typology assessments, there are many outcomes that I found interesting. For starters, in the DISC assessment there were multiple categories that gave me various feedback. These included decisive, interactive, stabilizing, and cautious categories. My decisive score showed moderately low on the “D” spectrum and I thought that was very accurate. I tend to be hesitant on sharing my opinions in big group setting and I also would rather support someone else’s decisions rather than argue with them unless they are completely wrong.…

Personal leadership / management style analysis During my first few weeks in the field experience course, I have noticed the complexity of leadership and management that is involved in the work field. Both, a leader and a manager are very important people in an organization. According to Collins (2001), managers and leaders “exist in different forms, roles and responsibilities”; as a result, Five Level Hierarchy exists, where level one has highly capable individuals, two is contributing team member, three is competent manager, four is an effective leader, and finally five is an executive. A great leader must be an effective communicator in order to lead a group of people in order to accomplish a goal or vision.…

One of the most challenging things at being a great leader has been the ability to adapt to our worlds ever changing culture and traditions, preserving what is essential and what are outdated ideas. (Heifetz, 2009) To me this has been ever so evident during the past year, learning what once worked with one group of Soldiers no longer fit my new platoon. When I first joined the Army, I learned you don’t ask questions, you listen and execute. Learning from past experiences I executed the same mindset which didn’t result the same effects as previously.…

In the nursing profession, a nurse manager's personal style of leadership impacts multiple aspects of a healthcare facility's operations. Being adept in recognizing these styles enables nurses to develop their skills to become better leaders, as well as improving relationships with colleagues and other leaders, who have previously been challenging to work with. For example, 24 studies reported that leadership styles focused on people and relationships (transformational, resonant, supportive, and consideration) were associated with higher nurse job satisfaction, whereas 10 studies found that leadership styles focused on tasks (dissonant, instrumental and management by exception) were associated with lower nurse job satisfaction. These are the…

During my time here at Maryville I have found that I have a difficult time assuming a leadership role when I’m in a group with other individuals who have stronger/dominant personalities. Last year in my PBL group we each took turns being a leader for a week throughout the PBL group process. One of my strengths as a leader is that I’m open to hearing thoughts or opinions that are different than my own and the groups. So during this PBL session we started off by everyone sharing their intervention ideas. The group was discussing which intervention would be best…

In terms of leadership style, I would consider myself more towards social leadership that focused more on teamwork, resolving disputes and providing support (Myers, 2013). Instead of directing the other group members on what to do, I distributed my authority with my group members by giving them the opportunity to voice their ideas as well as involving them in decisions making processes. I believed that group members felt more appreciated when their suggestions were acknowledged which then enhanced more creative and productive thoughts. This was due to the fact that brainstorming that involved the entire group encourages and stimulates ideas from different individuals (Nemeth, Personnaz, Personnaz & Goncalo,…
