During a short walk to class, a simple look around reveals the amount of students instantly connecting with friends and family, near and far, by simply send a text on a smartphone. While cell phones are a popular way to convey information, society functions through various forms of communication. The Communication Model Document outlines the essential process of how communication works. Beginning with the speaker, the process runs through a series of important terminology explaining how to appropriately transmit a message to an audience, as well as the audience’s duty to perceive the message and generate feedback. In Christopher Johnstone’s The Art of the Speaker, there are two types of noise, external and internal. External noise is defined as “environmental factors that can interfere with the transmission of the message”, while internal noise is defined as “inattention or selective perception.” According to Art of the Speaker, both forms can have an unfavorable effect on the message because the noise causes the receiver to miss or tune out specific parts of the message, thus creating an altered decoding of the message. An example would be a student daydreaming about lunch during lecture. While the student is physically present, a brain focused on other activities causes the student to disregard key components embedded in the lecture that help structure a better understanding of the material presented. Likewise, all previous parts mentioned, are enveloped in the context. As better defined by the model, the context is “all the factors of time, location, occasion, and setting that affect a communication event.” The context in relation to the situation is imperative to how the sender will be able to communicate to the receiver.
