Alcohol may be the most common drug used amongst college athletes. Generally, most of these athletes blatantly ignore the factors that are detrimental to achieving the optimal performance they are searching for. Often times, athletes may find themselves with little spare time to go out drinking and partying, but that little time may be spent binge drinking and getting heavenly intoxicated. Overtime, professionals have documented the effects of alcohol and how it adversely effects being on top of you game both mentally and physically.
Being on top of your game both mentally and physically is paramount in college sports. Athletes, like the rest of the population consume alcohol. Research has shown that athletes have started to drink as early as junior high school but may start even earlier. At the high school level, male athletes are more likely to use and even abuse alcohol. Alcohol consumption amongst athletes can have a toxic effect on a variety of systems in the human body including the muscle, metabolic, neurological and also affect performance and recovery systems simultaneously. It’s no secret that the general population of college student’s habitual abuse of alcohol is common, but it is not as uncommon to see this use among the athletes as well.
