What is jet lag? When an individual travels from one-time zone to another, it causes them to feel weary and exhausted, this temporary disorder is identified as jet lag, also known as desynchronosis. Our bodies have an internal clock which indicates when we must go to sleep and wake up. This “internal clock” is better known as the, circadian rhythms of the body. Circadian rhythms have an effect on the body temperature, sleep and wakefulness, and various hormonal changes. In order for an individual to perform at its highest potential, and be alert, one must keep their circadian rhythms fine-tuned by getting enough sleep. The pineal gland plays a huge role in helping the body produce melatonin to help maintain these rhythms. When an individual …show more content…
There is no way we can completely avoid or prevent the side effects of jet lag, but there are techniques and tips we can follow in order to reduce the severity of the effects. The first technique to follow in order to avoid jet lag effects is to simulate to your new schedule before you leave for your next destination. If you are traveling east, then just go to sleep earlier than you usually would. It’s also very important to avoid caffeine and alcohol because it disrupts the sleep cycles. Try drinking water before and after your flight, this will keep you feeling full and hydrated. Next, it’s mandatory to understand that one must eat sensibly in order to feel normal. Do not eat high carb or fatty foods before or after your flight because this will make you feel sick and it will cause you to have many stomachaches. This does not mean that you starve yourself on the plane, plane food may not be good, but it’s important to fill your stomach with food so that you don’t feel weak and nauseous. One really good way to prevent jet lag is by creating a bedtime ritual. By creating a bed time ritual, you will easily be able to trick your body into thinking it’s time to go to sleep. Examples of bed time rituals include, taking a warm bath, reading a book, listening to your favorite song, or even just drinking a glass of
