Opportunities such as being introduced to diversity, the help of finding one’s self, and the openings to a student’s future. A student’s introduction to diversity is so important. If a student has never been in the position where they have to interact with another student that is not quite like one self, when the time comes it may be socially awkward for the student. Diversity not only opens the social door but it can also help a student get a much better perspective on the life styles of other countries. It is a great learning opportunity. Often times if a student gets to know an international student they will open up and explain their countries traditions and explain what it is like over there. There is a part of everyone that wanders what a different country is like and interacting with a diverse student can feed that curiosity. In addition to diversity, public and private schooling has many extracurricular activities a student can choose from. Whether it is sports, art, music, drama or even educational, schools host organizations that students can be involved in to see what is most liked by that student. When a student finds that passion it can bring out the student’s true personality. If taken seriously enough, these extracurricular activities can even bring the student scholarships for college is they wish to pursue their involvement. Leading into college, public and private schools also host college and job fairs for a student to get a look at what their future may look like. The opportunities are endless in public and private

DuBois and Neville (1997) argue that mentoring programs were largely time limited, issue focused, group oriented, and implemented by trained professionals such as counselors, psychologists, or teachers. They also argue that well-run mentoring programs result in only a "small benefit" for the average child, and poorly designed programs that do not adequately train or screen mentors can be harmful, especially for children who have experienced neglect or abuse. They furthermore state that these at-risk youths need more counseling than an untrained volunteer can typically provide. Such children are often hypersensitive to their mentor's actions and may feel abandoned with little or no justification.…

Many students tend to join extracurriculars their friends join. Rather than picking the club that describes them as who they are, they drift towards activities that have more members or “look good” on college applications. When I was a freshman, I joined eleven clubs, signing up for whichever clubs my friends told me to. My email was filled with the dates of club meetings I could not recall joining. As the year progressed and I realized which clubs I had a passion for.…

Something that I heard from lots of college representatives and current college students that I knew was that extra curricular activities looks good to colleges. I knew that I had the sports aspect of extracurricular activities because I played baseball and basketball throughout my high school career but extra clubs and activities outside sports were lacking in my case. After friends and family endlessly bugged me for weeks on end about the importance of being more involved, I finally decided to apply to a well known group/society which was the National Honor Society. After I was accepted I had to search for somewhere to spend 10 hours at and take care of my community service. When I originally looked at the time, I thought that it would be a waste of time but I knew it would be helpful to me and my transcript.…

With the opening of another middle school campus, just a few blocks away, this year, Smith Middle School has gone from being one of the largest and most diverse campuses in the district to being one the smallest and least diverse in the district. Due to this change in demographic, it is imperative to create a school culture that is welcoming to all students. It is even more important to include students’ culture, background, gender, race, ethnicity and emotional development when creating lessons, activities and programs on campus. During Open House this year, the primary question that parents expressed was that of how would I, as a teacher, could help their child acclimate to their new environment. Some students had moved from across the district, others from out-of-state, a few were new to the country, while still others were joining the general education population for the first time.…

Children go to school so they can learn and be taught a variety of subjects by a teacher qualified to teach them, alternatively to the lessons parents give their children when growing up at home. Parents however who decide to homeschool may say it is because they don 't trust the board of education to teach their children properly, but what they don 't realize is that they aren 't necessarily qualified unless they have a teacher 's license, even if it 's technically legal to teach your children without one. Teaching when your own personal views prevents children forming their own opinion does not help children, and that biased education starting at a young age can affect their interpretation of everything thereafter. When parents decide to…
