Reflection On Domestic Violence

All three of the resources were great and offered vital information pertaining to domestic violence. I learned a lot of new things that I did not know previously. One thing I learned was that in Arizona someone dies due to a domestic violence related incident, every three days. (Statistics & Reports, 2015). This is important because this shows that domestic violence is a common, ongoing issue in Arizona. I find this very sad because the issue is underreported. Also not only is the victim or the offender killed in the incidents, targeted family members of the abused victim, siblings, parents, and innocent bystanders. (Statistics & Reports, 2015). One factor that makes domestic violence dangerous to police officers is the offender could be armed and may attempt to injure the officer. Another factor that makes these calls dangerous for officers is drugs and alcohol. Drugs and alcohol can definitely impair an individual and can also have a major effects on one’s actions and decision making. Officers are at risk when coming into contact with an offender who is under the influence, because their mind state and behavior is unpredictable. Lastly, domestic violence calls can be extremely dangerous to police officers because although they are there to help the victim, the victim sometimes do not want the help nor do they want their offenders to be arrested. This can lead to almost anything occurring.
